This probably says more about me than anything else but I dont think I've ever built a prototype of anything thats outperformed a production model product.

In the past year or two, it seems like this has become a favored way to easily dismiss someones moral opinion and is being appended to my list of things to help me disregard the opinion of the person calling out 'virtue signaling'

I would imagine that the publics knowledge about their advancements is significantly far behind what it actually is.

The only winner in that scenario is the company manufacturing the NFC devices. That system is too complex.

That post was downvoted and flagged, no need to further indulge that sort of thing either way.

Introducing a single point of failure (1 database, across the internet), organized by a largely complex system (the DoT, possibly) to cope with an edge case doesn't feel like a very elegant solution.

Of the hundreds of places this article was put online today, this website is probably the worst presented form I've seen.

The incentive is creating well behaved applications. Electron apps have this awesome tendency to treat RAM as though it's an infinite resource.

Well aware, thanks. I only ever stated that the Luhn algorithm would validate just the numbers.

To just validate the numbers themselves, you can use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luhn_algorithm Beyond that, I'm not sure what that person is talking about.

I don't see many Windows users hanging out in the CLI for extended periods of time, either. Even though OP wasn't serious about fedora nixing grep, surely you see the lack of equivalence in that argument.

It is not yet possible to know when the next one is going to show up. We are only currently aware of a bunch of rocks that most likely wont hit us.

That's 100% of the point. If other planets/moons/whatever haven't been colonized by the time humanity gets empirical data for that hypothesis, a lot of people are going to wish they'd put that a little higher on the

They don't mention anything about the central topic of the article; the man who was stuck in the cave. If they had any sort of emotional reaction to the article, I imagine they would have said something about it.

If the only thing that mattered in this world was income then you might have had a point. Thinking others should change their opinion because you don't understand subjectivity is absurd.

The philosophical pillar you're standing on doesn't stop me from saying that this website is subjectively awful.

I bet OP understands that personal feelings are subjective. That website makes someone a whole bunch of money. That doesn't mean that website isn't awful.

I can understand your frustration but a downvote would have sufficed. If you hadn't seen the HN guidelines, take a gander when you get a spare moment. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html Most notably this:

Cool, I wasn't talking about cost though. I asked if coal could be made clean enough to compete with other forms of energy generation in that context.
