On the note of "I really think that Twillio is first to market because of the inept management of telcos, but how do you compete when they figure it out?", the time for them "figuring it out" has come and passed imo. All

If you've actually tried a social/multiplayer VR experience, you would know the presence that being "physically with" the other person is much more impactful than a video chat. The avatars don't even need to look go

Cool, good to see some colorful WebVR stuff coming out of Google Experiments. Hopefully that means WebVR will be making from Chromium to Chrome soon =)

It is explained further down actually: "But in paperwork filed with Nevada regulators last July, Otto claimed that it “developed in house and/or currently deployed” a 64-laser LiDAR system in its autonomous trucks. Uber now says t

Because they would need to join the union and the union negotiates compensation for everyone, that's one of the main purposes of a union.

Actually though! This has been an internal meme since then, there's been PRs for implementing it just hanging around for years =P I had to check the date to make sure it wasn't an April Fools joke. Congrats Twilio!

Yea agreed, super confused on what's wrong with React. I know the renderer is being re-worked, but that only matters for Facebook-sized projects afaik, which 99.9% are not.

What? RTSs are still around... Starcraft 2 was released in the last 5 years or so, for example.

From the graphics programmer perspective? Nothing radically different at all. It's the same real-time rendering techniques that have existed for a while. VR is only different in design methodology really (and performance requirements

The star requirements make total sense if you've ever worked on a review/recommendation system before. The reality is most people don't give accurate ratings. Any sub-5 star score from a rider usually means something went wro

Gene Roddenberry's "Andromeda" tackled this pretty well I think. The warship can be operated pretty much entirely by the on-board sentient AI, and it is because it has a skeleton crew of like 6 for most of the series. Because

I think we can pretty safely assume all information given to the government is in the hands of government agencies, one way or another.

See, people say that, but I have yet to see that in practice. I worked at a unicorn with an unlimited PTO policy and it worked out very well for everyone. It was very comforting to know I could just tell my manager "hey, I'd like

Idk dude, VR headsets have already sold to millions of consumers and new applications pop up by the day. Not only that, but unlike most of the technologies you mentioned, VR has massive backing already from some of the most powerful compani

That kind of precision isn't necessary for tracking position accurately for VR/AR though, Hololens' current system is pretty damn good and I'm sure internally it's improved a bunch as they roll out their own VR head

Sure, but Unity is a game engine, I think he means more like Xcode is to iOS dev as _____ is to VR. Unity isn't optimized for making general applications, although it looks like they want to head in that direction for VR.

This will be solved by untethering the experience and adding Inside-Out tracking. Then, you could go to a local park and go on a Skyrim adventure with redirected walking [1], for example. A 100yd football field could potentially simulate 2k

VR advancements to look out for in 2017: - Eye tracking (it already works perfectly, I've tried it myself at SIGGRAPH), this will enable a few cool things: - Foveated Rendering - rendering only what is in the fovea view at high qua

Could be that rumors are true and they stopped the car project. Could also be that Apple's extreme compartmentalization came into play and Chris wasn't privy to that team and therefore couldn't really express interest in it.

Well it didn't really come out of nowhere. Valve and Oculus worked very closely together before the FB acquisition. Valve had been working on its prototype alongside Oculus, and only decided to bring it to market when Oculus sold to FB
