Brain activity aside, I would recommend everybody to exercise at least half an hour in the evening. It guarantees a nice feeling of tiredness at night, and sleep comes easily. Works wonders for me.

Hi Andrew, sorry to hijack the thread. Just wanted to say you guys are doing an amazing job at full-text email searching. Do you have any paper on that? I know Google publishes research papers and technical reports but couldn't find one abo

It is a very good idea. However, I feel that there is something off. Maybe the excess clicking. Maybe that it's not clear whether a paragraph is expanded or collapsed. Don't want to discourage you, quite the opposite. Give it some more thou

I don't think it's fair to treat him this way. Except for the kernel, pretty much everything I use is GNU or was inspired by GNU. From the coreutils to the window environment, passing through the compiler, most linux systems are half GNU. B

My grandfather, a regular country man, is horrorized by the amount of choices he has. Nowadays there is a remote for the TV with a lot of buttons, another for the video decoder, with more buttons, and another for the radio, with yes, more b

At first I thought I would read a rant about current user interfaces, but the article turned out to be well thought, smartly written and, above all, it doesn't discuss interfaces _per se_. It goes up a meta level and proposes eliminating in

I'm curious, are there any active newsgroups worth visiting and discussing? I used to roam some groups until about 2003, but most of them are pretty much abandoned now, and I haven't been able to find the same level of discussion on the Int

Do rpm-based managers still work out the package dependences incorrectly, take a long time to download the headers, and generally break constantly? Honest question, I haven't used an RPM-based distro since a couple of years ago. Last was op

Hey, maybe you are very good at address and data organizing. I'm serious. It's just so difficult for the majority of us. As relix said, if you find that easy, you'll make a lot of money working as a GPU programmer. That being said, there ar

We also work with banks and process huge amount of data, but we don't use those kind of mainframes. I'm not saying nobody uses them, but rather that there is a trend to use a NoSQL database on a regular Linux system rather than z/OS. It's e

I work with supercomputers. Mainframes are very, very extended nowadays. Researchers use them, the government uses them, some big business use them. From my point of view, there are four "mainframe" concepts, and one of them is not a monoli

Talking from experience, VirtualBox doesn't play well with Steam games (or games in general). For me, Terraria was buggy and the graphics had some glitches. Half-Life had mouse issues, etc. I used to buy Parallels but they use the same upda
