Daily cases are doubling every 12 days or so. Now maybe that won’t hold up in the general population, but it’s thousands of people already. I’m very disappointed to not see a anything approaching a robust response given what we’ve gone th

I don't think that there are any Sarbecoronaviruses other than SARS2 that have an FCS. This paper from 2021 supports that conclusion [1]. There are other Coronaviruses that have an FCS, but not Sarbecoronaviruses, and none of them us

This is not true. Ralph Baric developed (and patented) a seamless technique to assemble coronaviruses in 2002 [1]. Baric was a close collaborator of the Coronavirus group at WIV. Since then there has been even more progress. Since 2015 o

And yet, even your tomato sauce in the glass jar went through probably hundreds of yards of plastic tubing that leaches phthalates in the factory. It's essentially impossible to get away from this stuff entirely, although I do think y

But essentially no light vehicles damage the roads at all. Virtually all road damage is caused by heavy trucks. If legislators cared about charging for road damage, they would heavily tax diesel.

Yep. With unlimited energy you don’t even need sunlight to grow crops, you can use artificial light in any quantity you want.

That’s possible. However there are also a huge number of things that would be great for the environment like really complete recycling, very land efficient agriculture, ocean cleanup, etc, that would become economically feasible if energy

I don't think that we should institute caning, but I do think that new forms of punishment are needed. Jail and prison are terrible forms of punishment. Someone who goes to prison is going to lose their job, maybe lose their house and

Depending on your network in SF, you may be able to source contract work from there while working in Germany. If you can put up with not having local coworkers, you can get SF rates and pay small-town Bavaria costs and have her family to h

The reason banks have so many Vice Presidents is that to bind a company to a contract, you need to be a corporate officer. A Vice President is a corporate officer but a director isn't. If you want to issue loans, etc, you practically

We already have a geologic repository. It's called the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, and has been receiving military waste for 23 years. All that needs to be done is for Congress to authorize it for civilian waste as well.

It’s probably pretty close to a wash. A gas stove is about 40% efficient. A good combined cycle has power plant is about 60%, transmission is about 90%, and an induction stove is about 85%. That gives a net efficiency of 46%.

This is why we need slow chargers everywhere. Even a basic 120V outlet can provide 1.5kW of vehicle charging. Over the course of the night, this is 18kWh, which is enough for about 80 miles of charge for a Tesla Model 3. This is more tha

Sure. However, IMO it's more useful to look at it from this standpoint: Most usage of energy has to go through a thermal->mechanical energy conversion step. Carnot efficiency practically limits this to 20-60% efficiency or so. I

Electric cars are usually about 4x as efficient as ICE in terms of energy input -> propulsive energy[1], so it's more like $5.50/gallon, but still pretty expensive. [1] http://www.afteroilev.com/Pub/EFF_Tan

Yeah but they don't change within a few seconds. You constantly see the lane lines wiggling on these displays and that suggests to me that they have a problem with integrating information over time about objects.
