I've found that other programmers are one of the best places to get your first few gigs from. The best programmers are too swamped to take on extra work, and many are eager to refer rejected clients on to someone they can make a solid

Sorry I didn't convey that well enough. I was mostly addressing this to programmers in my region who seem much more risk averse than many of my colleagues in other places (like SF) and yet complain about missed opportunities.
