Compare what kinds of music making tools are available inside the app store and outside the app store and you'll see this is completely not the case. There is tremendous competition outside the app store in this market but devs can sti

Software is now deeply integrated into every aspect of our lives. It's expected that there's a lot more of it. What we don't know is how many and what variety of software companies would exist if the app store wasn't so

Same for music work - I can find anything from Garageband and Logic remote, to Cubasis, FL, Audio Units by top brands, controllers, sequencers, and so on. It's telling if you compare what music software is available in the app store

Subscriptions are great if you can get your users to sign up for one. But most people are very reluctant to add another subscription to the list of monthly bills they have to pay. For example I might pay $10 every year or two to upgrade a n

Equally, a built-in, one-tap-to-install app store with frictionless payment led to an explosion of software creation and developer revenue. Trust was a huge problem, distribution was a huge problem, and Apple solved both. It's impor

The problem is that there is some benefit in integrating almost any service into the growing Apple ecosystem and almost any product could conceiveably benefit from become an Apple feature. I think regulators need to draw the line somewhere

My base stress level improved tremendously when I gave up iOS development and went back to the web. I don't have to deal with frustratingly broken tools every day or hold my breath every time I publish an update in case some random a

I have a few hundred tailwind classes left in my projects after a purge css pass. If you have thousands you probably should start looking into extracting some components. If you literally have "a few thousand" colors in your UI y

In practice I find UI built with Tailwind to be a lot more consistent because all the dimensions are built from standard values instead of custom dimensions for every css class. The bigger problem in my experience is that most designers are

The problem for a new technology like Phoenix that wants to dethrone an established player like Rails is that it's not good enough to be 50% better. It has to be 2x or 3x as productive to offset the smaller ecosystem and pool of develo

Samsung's software is really not bad these days. I feel like there's a hint of Western arrogance in the dismissals they get now.

Samsung has led the way in many respects. Higher refresh displays, multiple cameras, always-on displays, in-screen fingerprint readers, much larger phones, etc.

FWIW I've had good experiences with recent Samsung devices. The OS is fast and stable and adds some useful things to stock Android. Their bundled apps aren't terrible either. I use their mail & notes apps. At this point I'

At least in the places I've been in Asia distribution is a huge part of it. Samsung phones are available in every shop and they have their own dedicated stores in the bigger shopping malls.

I was using the 16" MBP before this but having gotten used to the 13" that now feels ridiculously huge. It helps that I'm not using XCode much though. That really wants a lot of screen real estate.

Are you using an 8GB or 16GB M1? My 8GB air has been fine for everything I've done with it so far but I'm wondering if Docker will be the first thing that needs more than 8GB.
