This is definitely a problem. There's also the problem of devs that can't do the simplest task without pulling in 5 massive libraries. The thing that keeps programming fun is that every case is a little different.

I've been traveling all over the world for the last ten years. I've never had any serious problems paying for anything with good old fashioned credit/debit cards. Even getting cash in the local currency is trivial with ATMs.

This is exactly why Epic is trying to claim that Fortnite is more than a game right?

I don't think game consoles are a useful analogy for the mobile market. Different business models and different stakes for society.

Maybe but I think that’s a separate issue that’s going to have to be hashed out in court and in legislation. Nobody would buy Apple hardware if those tools didn’t exist so in some sense they’ve already been extremely well compensated for th

I don't think Apple should be allowed to both require that all apps on the phone go through their store and that they get a cut of all the business that goes through that store. Either allow other stores or allow other payment method

If you don't like the payment options the app offers then you're free to choose another app that does. Isn't that the same justification Apple's defenders always give?

If the frictionless payment system was so much more appealing to users that it generated enough extra income to offset Apple's fess then devs would offer it. This is how marketplaces are supposed to work.

I've been doing a RN app lately after not using it for almost two years. It's still a very fast way to iterate on both Android & iOS but it also still feels extremely brittle. I've tried and failed to upgrade to the lates

You could just eat beef and you'd probably not be great, but have all your nutritional requirements met You'd get scurvy, just for starters. Not to mention what a job a complete lack of fiber would do on your digestive system.

Much more interesting, though, is what happens if Apple opens up its cohort tracking and targeting, and says that apps, or Safari, can now serve anonymous, targeted, private ads without the publisher or developer knowing the targeting data

Unlike Airtags these don't participate in Apple's global location tracking network. I think it's also important to consider that Apple getting into this market does a lot to normalize use of trackers and also make them commer

The latest Exynos chips are pretty competitive with Qualcomm. Samsung has closed the gap considerably in this generation and even outperforms Qualcomm in some respects. https://www.gsmarena.com/exynos_2100_vs_snapdragon_888_

Of course this depends on what you're trying to do. If you're doing 3d rendering or video compositing or heavy audio DSP or gaming you need all the power you can get. I share your concerns about openness though.

I use Minitest over Rspec whenever I can in new Rails projects. The ecosystem of tools isn't as rich around Minitest but I spend a lot less time trying to remember various bits of the Rspec DSL and less time deciphering my colleauges&#

So if some day an alien race arrives and starts farming humans for sandwich meat just because they like the way we taste that's fair play as far as you're concerned?

At least in the US most of the weight cattle put on comes at the end when they're fed grain in feeding lots. Needless to say this they're not drinking "green water". https://www.nationalgeographic.com/sci

$200 is what a single high quality plugin costs. Complete DAW packages with many bundled plugins like Ableton or Cubase are at least 3x that price.

Only because Apple can afford to sell it at break even or a loss. All the comparable packages from third parties are at least 3x that price and nobody's getting rich there.

Those same devs also do not sell their products in the Mac app store for the same reason. Too many restrictions and prices trending to the bottom.
