Most likely they’re not using the new impeller rendering engine. My flutter app is very smooth on iOS and I didn’t have to put in any fancy hacks to make it that way.

The dart ecosystem is way richer than I expected it to be. So far I've found good options for everything I need and in more than a few cases the libraries are better designed than the JS equivalents. I can't speak to Linux desktop

It works well enough. It's a bit of a hassle to set up and you have to always run the file watcher and add the `part "blah.g.dart"` imports. I wouldn't say it's held me back but I'd be happier if the language i

After years of working in Typescript I've been doing a Dart project for the last 6 months or so. Overall it's a great language but one of the clunky aspects is the use of code generation for so many things. If this can reduce or e

Two of the worst colleagues I ever had also went on to thrive at Google. It’s been hard for me to take their claims of only hiring the best since then.

I did about 8 years of native iOS development. I’ll never go back to that. As frustrating as the web can be I’ll take that over being locked into a single platform proprietary toolkit.

I've had good experiences with Flutter on both mobile platforms and Mac desktop. After doing several React Native apps over the years Flutter feels better engineered across the board. It would certainly be my first choice for a cross p

Yeah there are options already. Swinsian and Doppler are also pretty good. But I think there's still room for improvement.

I'm working on a desktop music player for Mac that does support flac. It should be ready for release early next year. FLAC is great because it's future proof. You can transcode to other formats as needed but keep a lossless archiv

It looks like with Qobuz you only get one chance to download your purchased downloads? If you lose the files there's no way to download them again?

I assume artists do get a bigger cut on Bandcamp but unfortunately it looks like Bandcamp is in dire straits. So I'm doing my best to support the remaining independent music stores.

Very interesting that he plans to continue working on Flutter after leaving Google: https://ln.hixie.ch/?start=1700627532&count=1 I agree with him that Flutter is on a good trajectory.

I now ignore all Ron Amadeo articles on Ars. I don’t know where his disdain for Google originated but his predictably snarky dismissals of all things Google are just bad and lazy journalism.

I think your overall velocity with Flutter is going to be much higher than QT. The dev experience is so much nicer. You are going to have to be willing to stick your neck out a bit though, that’s true.

The vision of Swift as a truly cross platform, modern language Apple laid out in the initial announcement was genuinely exciting. Unfortunately it seems like they didn't really mean it.

I think flutter is emerging as a compelling alternative for cross platform desktop development. I’m building a desktop app in it now and so far the experience has been quite positive.

No so far I've had a great experience with it. But keeping up with new improvements and changes to the underlying platforms is going to require ongoing investment. Hopefully google continues to think it's worth it.

Flutter is actually pretty close to this right now. I'm building an app that targets Windows, Mac, iOS and Android and so far it's working really well on all of them with more than 90% code reuse. If Google doesn't give up on

It’s a great language but it hasn’t really found a killer app yet outside of Android development and Java has improved a lot recently so the incentive to switch to Kotlin is reduced. I’d like to see it thrive but I’m not optimistic.

I used to favor the web for the same reasons but the churn in web technology is at least as bad in mobile. The knowledge I had three years ago is almost useless now. And on top of that you have to deal with a platform that is really a big p
