It’s not a great choice to build a reliable software business in 2024 but most of the other choices right now aren’t great either.

Shipping unsigned stuff is not commercially viable. Very few users even know how to get around gatekeeper and even fewer are willing to do it to run your app.

Unfortunately it’s not hard to imagine that these pressures are going to cause a huge amount of political instability and dramatically increase the odds of catastrophic conflict though.

I also really like Flutter and think the Flutter team has done a great job on the tech side. Google management, on the other hand, seems determined to do some very short sighted cost cutting and that makes a project like Flutter vulnerable.

I’m very uncomfortable with the degree to which I’ve become dependent on VSCode, GitHub, and Typescript. Microsoft has the same incentives to exploit their users now that they always have.

I recently launched a new app on both app stores. I was up and running in a day on iOS. It took me almost three weeks and a huge amount of red tape on Android. Since launch I've done a number of updates and the review process is always

Maybe but still the overwhelming majority of app store apps never find an audience or make any real revenue. And polish only matters for certain kinds of apps and even then only after you've identified a real market. Targeting both mob

Definitely not worth the risk. I think all this policy is going to do is reinforce the already strong incentive to launch first on iOS and only consider an Android port once you've validated your idea. And the Android ports are going t

The XCode requirement makes some sense because it would take Apple a lot of extra work to port and support their tools on other platforms. Work that they have no incentive to do. But I think the native app market in general has peaked. Most

It's a dumb & very counter-productive policy and will choke off the supply of new Android devs. Ironically it's now much easier to launch a new app on the Apple App Store than it is on Android.

I’ve been saying for two years now that curated directories are poised to make a comeback on the web. It just needs a critical mass of curators. I think this is why those awesome-$tech lists are so popular.

Good question. I suspect it's because the downsides of losing the larger ecosystem of more mainstream languages outweigh the upsides of a functional language. The libraries, package managers, tooling, runtime, debuggers, documentation,

Functional programming languages haven't gone mainstream but functional techniques are very common now. Higher order functions, immutable data structures, declarative UI frameworks, etc are things you're quite likely to encounte

I also think that in the longer term Google's embrace of KMP does not bode well for Dart and Flutter, especially in light of recent cost-cutting measures. But for now Flutter seems like a much more mature stack, at least on desktop.

His enthusiasm for SwiftUI in particular is a bit hard to reconcile with my experience using it. It's nice on the happy path but you very easily stray into areas with baffling compiler errors and terrible UI performance.

Thanks! Overall I’ve had a great experience with Flutter. I tried a few cross platform stacks before settling on it and it feels like the most polished and mature choice.

It doesn't help that there's no way to specify in the contract of the function that it can throw. Blowing up your entire program because it can't parse a URL is something you should be made explicitly aware of.

VC wouldn't exist if founders didn't want and need capital and have no other way of getting it. This is too reductive. A lot of founders have to raise because they're competing with other companies with VC funding, often du
