And, what, you think the Fidelity guys don't happily go out and throw your retirement money down for strippers and coke on Fridays? What about Accenture 'analysts', or 'ThoughtWorkers'? You think that because their websites have high-perf

I use the same thing I did to quit smoking. Sort of an OCD-like 'As Good As It Gets' technique. Step 1. Whenever I feel the 'urge' to read e.g. HN, I close my eyes and quit my browser. Then I breathe slowly and deeply three times, holding i

By definition, if it's not working and you keep doing it, then what you're doing is not scientific management. Management by people claiming to manage scientifically, and management by scientists (not just of society, but anything) both cer

Yes, you do have the answers, although you can't assume they're correct: the article cites studies. This is exactly the point of doing Science (or at least sociological pseudo-science): Opinions Are Worthless.

The screenshots don't make it look all that special ... looks sort of like old Windows. The logo is really cool, though. Hopefully I'm wrong, and somebody can enlighten me?

Surely you must see the Tao in all this? Reject duality. "Yes" and "No" create each other. They are both to be used, in harmony. This article is really about honesty. Eliminating posturing and the little face-saving nothings from "No" half-

What I did in Rails on a previous app was: - Tie hooks into the logger so I can track exactly which ActiveRecord models are accessed in a given page view. - Have 100% test coverage AND make sure coverage pattern (i.e. frequency distribution

I think this article is a joke, no? I mean, "a second webserver known as nginx, which serves malware," cooked up by evil Russians, deviously operating on port 8080? Hehe. I think it's quite good, actually.

Honestly: 30 days? $100K revenue from a new tech venture when you're 16 working in the afternoons and can't code ? Reaaallly? I realize these were crazy times but .. I smell a fish.

You're right. I might buy it if they inserted the word 'genetic,' but clearly, the social traits of a stupid person are largely the product of their stupidity. Nonetheless it's a useful law - it helps to overcome bias toward believing othe

I mean both, actually. Not only did it have a fundamentally appealing design in every detail, but it was also (in the early days) a great opener! "Ooooooo, is that the eye -Phone? Can I touch it? OMG, this ball-tilt game is awesome! "

If you go through a bit of learnyouahaskell.com you'll understand the code in those slides quite quickly. But ... the problem I have with Haskell is that the other people who use it are smarter than me, so while I can parse their code, so

Honestly, you know what the difference was? Sex appeal. Pure and simple. When iPhone came out, I had the flashiest PDA available. It had WiFi and I could do phone calls over VoIP and watch movies. But man I dropped that thing like a J2E

Yeah, I used a bad example. It's not really over-the-topness in terms of size or expense, like in the U.S. (where it's really an obsession with number-one-ness). Have you ever seen the "Human Tetris" video? It's a Japanese gameshow. You mi

Gosh, Haskell is so readable! Most of those slides have nothing but code on them, yet they read perfectly comprehensibly. I guess it's a testament both to the language, and to the author's skill in expressing concepts clearly in it.

My theory is that it has much to do with a culture that grows up expressing ideas pictorially. During my (admittedly short .. just 1yr) time in Japan, I noticed that people don't just write in Kanji, they think in Kanji. They pun in K

You can play the Zeno game with this. The first half of the items is actually an article of n/2 items - so you think of n/4 in the first 5 minutes. So you never actually think of an item.

I think it's sort of a textual fist-bump to people who smile when they see n followed by n/2, because it means something 's about to get logarithmic, and we like that.
