What is Reddit's value? There's no secret sauce, its popularity just comes from the network effect. The UI/UX post-redesign is horrible and slow, and the site is bombarded with politics and hatred. I've had a few Reddi

I think it would be a great shame if the only self-aware life in the observable universe dies out before it can find out the mechanisms behind all of this. Sometimes when I'm trying to doze off at night, I think about how strange our e

It can get much creepier. It's possible to reverse image search a person's profile picture from one site to find out where else they have profiles - given that they reuse their profile picture - which many do.

I respect Brave's efforts to make Tor accessible to the masses, but it also puts people at risk. There's lot of people with not a great deal of technical knowledge who are aware of Tor and might see it as a means to bulletproof pr

Package managers that come as part of a programming language are only part of the story. What about system packages? I'm talking about shared objects, headers, those sorts of things that you might install with apt or dnf. This is what

It's just imaginary numbers at this point. I'm no economist but the fact that this is all still functioning seems like a miracle to me, resting on the single concept of owing money.

I recently filled out an eConsult form hoping that it would allow me to get help asynchronously without having to get an appointment. The response I got was pretty much "call us". Useless. I have a feeling that form I filled will

Moving to an OS with an even larger attack surface and larger nightmare for "DevOps" doesn't seem like the right move. The right move would be to stop using a desktop OS for basic kiosks, develop an application-specific OS wh

That's what made it so daunting. I was completely powerless to argue against this massive, faceless corporation. I imagine for those who store their whole lives on Google, this feeling is amplified 100x.

Maybe unrelated but I was pretty much banned from using Amazon for over two years through no fault of my own. I even asked here for suggestions on what I could do. Alt accounts just got immediately locked too. In the end, the only way I man
