The Gnome 3 adversity is ancient history at this point and in my opinion very much a fabricated feud to drive up news article engagement. Publishing an article with a few open bugs or a disagreeing opinion doesn't say much about the qu

On the other hand, when a project tries to please everybody it will undoubtedly regress into a mess of options, toggles, extra buttons, have an atrocious UX and only be usable for the 'in crowd'. The few OSS tools I know to not ha

I suppose Gnome is aimed at the Red Hat enterprise customer base. Those computers are no private systems, they are company hardware. What matters for company hardware is standardization: easy to roll out, easy to train users, which means a

I don't think the average Red Hat customer will base their business decision on HN sentiment. Also, they're probably using software certified for Red Hat Linux and don't have the freedom to pick another OS if they want the su

Hibernate is not that bad. The problem with ORMs in the Java web space is lots of people used them as an 'extreme DRY' solution to link database 'objects' to the front-end which breaks separation of concerns and forces y

Having seen quite a lot of 'roll your own' solutions for wrapping queries: they were almost all unstable, inefficient messes that have a tendency to pick up lots of ad-hoc functionality. I'm not particularly fond of Hibernate

There is a browser on that thing. There will be generic 3d viewers that can access content over the internet. I think you can display what you want one way or the other. That they don't want porn to be the centerpiece I can understand.

I didn't go deep into the docs, but the 'movie' on the homepage clearly shows string-based field name mappings so I instantly saw that as a red flag... Nice to know it's implemented better though.
