Open source software is fantastic -- but is that how we're making our livings? From what I can tell, OSS is either a) a labor of love, in addition to a separate full-time job, b) supported by a nonprofit that pays you a salary out of g

Perhaps that's just the price you pay for access to ebooks at all -- particularly via an incredibly convenient system like Kindle? (Also, loaning -- the most pressing concern here -- is supported.) Authors need to get paid. I completel

Why are you guys so concerned about authors trying to control the profitless distribution of their product? I'm being serious -- what's the issue?

Aaron Greenspan has a great article about toxic waste in Silicon Valley -- "In Search of the Cookie Dough Tree," named after a persistent smell of raw cookie dough suspended around the Wells Fargo on California Avenue. The cookie

Number of states in a superposition and number of particles in the universe aren't really related measurements at all (except in the most trivial way) -- at least so far as I can see.

Yeah, I think it's inherently more striking to think about mass "becoming" energy, or the "energy content" of mass, than about the converse. Imagining energy "condensing" into mass is wild, but we spend a

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold#Toxicity , the gold ion is toxic, but there are no chemical processes known to occur in the human body that can solubilize metallic gold.
