What is concerning that is that other laptop makers are following Apple like lemmings. My current favorite laptop is the Dell Precision 55xx series, the business version of the XPS 15. The newest models of this line, the 15" 5550 and t

Yup, I also strongly disagree with the OP article. The most frustrating codebases I've dealt with are those with layers and layers of overly clever abstractions, and over-engineered generalizations which will never be used before the c

Dell now seems to use 2 types of barrel connectors, the older ones are 7.4mm and the newer ones are 4.5mm, usually for the thinner (e.g. XPS, Precision 55xx) laptops. Fortunately, you can get 4.5mm-to-7.4mm converter dongles and velcro them

I don't know about Thinkpads, but I've owned over a dozen Dell laptops. Their touchpads have been between Terrible to OK on Linux. Until my most recent Dell, the Precision 5510 (the business version of XPS 15). Finally almost as

I used screen for like 10-15 years. Two years ago, I switched to tmux because of some rough edges with screen. I can't remember what they were now, I think something to do with selecting the correct terminal type (TERM=screen? TERM=xte

This is identical to the Rule of 72, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_72 . Except that you are using 70. The amazing thing about the rule of 72 is that it works pretty well even for rates greater than 10%.

The concepts of "product-minded engineer" and "engineering-minded pm" make a lot of sense. But what do you mean by "reduced waste" in the context of software development?

I'm impressed that you can be productive with 4GB. On my dev laptop, I am often hitting 14-15GB usage. Chrome, Docker, NodeJS, and VSCode are the main culprits. I'm upgrading the machine to 32GB this weekend.

Is 4GB enough with the current web browsers and web pages? It feels like 8GB is the minimum for normal users, and 16GB is the minimum for software developers. I have a 4GB Chromebook and a 4GB MacBookAir, and they are both somewhat painful

TikTok is owned by a Chinese company, and China is a totalitarian state, so it's basically owned by the Chinese government. Is it too paranoid to worry about all the videos and their metadata being controlled by the Chinese government?
