Subversion would also work just fine. Some hosts already have Subversion installed, so setting things up is quite easy. Here are some examples: Dreamhost: http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Subversion MediaTemple: http://kb.mediatemple.net/questi

I actually first thought the site was about version control, given the name and the CVs references (which I assumed was a typo).

Update: This should be better now. I added a check for non-US addresses. That's really interesting. My geocode backstop is Google's geocode service. When I do a Google Map search for "90125" it also displays Palermo, Italy. I'll see what I

Nice work * The new search button is much better. * I would switch the news articles to change on click, not mouseover. The distance between map marker and news link is too far; too many other markers can accidentally be moused over. This i

A few thoughts: * It seems heavily skewed toward non-US sources. I'm in the US and did a search for Obama. It showed 1 result on the map. This made me think the site doesn't work very well. Strangely, the location of search results on the r

I've tried this method and have three observations: * Navigating to a given style attribute for editing was slower than standard format, presumably because instead of browsing to attributes via up/down arrows, I was now using left/right. Th

Many software engineers make the mistake of treating UI design like configuration - the more configurations options, the better. Do not fall into this trap. The mark of good design is not when there's nothing left to add, but when there's n

I earned my BS in accounting, but now I'm a developer. Your story sounds a lot like mine. A few thoughts: * Logistically, changing careers out of accounting/finance is relatively simple. Just explain it like you already did. * A MBA is a ti

I thought the meetings example was a weak one for the author to criticize. When I read "meetings are toxic," I interpret that as, "most meetings are a bad idea," which is basically what 37signals argues: http://gettingreal.37signals.com/ch

Cash flows aren't exclusively tied to operational activities. You can lose tons of money on the operational side, but make up for it in investments and debt, thus making your company cash flow positive. I'm not saying that's the case with F

Well, my main issue is that for said companies, ads are essentially the only source of revenue. So what would happen if that source of revenue was cut off? Perhaps an ad blocker becomes wildly popular. Well, that destroys Facebook and Googl

Something has always bothered me about companies like Facebook and Google that generate such a high percentage of their revenue from advertising. They strike me as quite vulnerable.

I think it's partially that. But it's also partially fear of the unknown. Essentially, the devil you know is better than the devil you don't. Sure, my health insurance now sucks and I'm terrified they'll drop me, but who knows what would

Avoiding broker fees is a bit easier said than done IMO. I suppose it's much easier if you already live in the city. But if you're moving to NYC and only have a limited time to find an apartment, it's hard to avoid.

Just curious, do you live and/or work in NYC? I find the rent (even in places like Astoria and Fort Greene) to be unreasonable, especially once you consider broker's fees. The best values IMO are in the NJ suburbs, where you can catch a 40

[Wall Streeters turned venture capitalists] are people who do dumb shit like ask about pricing for a premium version of a genuinely novel product (in a category with no existing market) that hasn't even launched yet...in the first meeting.

Glad I can help. Just to be clear about one point: I'm not suggesting that you intentionally fail. Rather, I'm just suggesting you lower the cost of failure.

Worrying about scalability and acquisition is not prudent at this stage, it's a waste of time IMO. Odds are that nobody will use your CMS. That being said, my advice is to get something up and running now and fail fast. I'm not a 37signals

It sounds to me like you're worrying about problems you don't have. You're talking scalability and acquisition before you have a single line of code, let alone any users.

Actually, the general taxable income argument may still not apply depending on how previous loses are carried forward. Which really ties into another point I was going to make that companies are quite adept at minimizing tax exposure. The G

I just wanted to point out that neither dividends nor share price require taxable income. Corporations with zero taxable income can both pay dividends and have share price go up. In that case, the investor is only paying 15%, not 35% x 15%.

I've used YUI Grids to build both Drupal and WordPress sites. It's pretty straight forward and definitely easier than trying to customize an existing CMS template/theme.

Fair enough. I also prefer a consumption tax, not flat though. But if we're going to have an income-based tax, I'd rather have all types of income treated/taxed equally.
