It was a bit of pick your poison between a gettext() alias collision, ugly namespace syntax, and potential confusion with magic methods. Hopefully too many people aren't confused.

IMO CoffeeScript exists because we can't really avoid JS for web apps. But avoiding PHP is pretty straightforward - you just use python, ruby, or whatever.

Just copying this from the docs, but you can pass an array of functions to mixin: __::mixin(array( 'capitalize'=> function($string) { return ucwords($string); } )); __::capitalize('moe'); // 'Moe'

raganwald and Ezku hit the nail on the head. Most of my work spans PHP and JS, so having consistency (something the PHP array functions particularly lack) is a big win.

You can always add functions via mixin. I'll see what I can do about the warnings.

Your problem isn't creating ideas or a hypothesis to test, it's finding problems. Finding problems worth solving is really difficult unless 1) you're already an industry insider (scratch your own itch) or 2) you listen very closely to indus

Find a great designer. Great design can convince your editors to keep the solution in house. Great design can attract talented developers.

Agreed. I'll always take an imperfect assessment over no assessment, and imperfect accountability over no accountability. The "it's too complicated" crowd needs to get on board or out of the way.

I would choose Facebook simply for name recognition. Having Facebook on your resume would carry more weight with many potential employers and partners.

I would suggest learning both Ruby (plus Rails) and Python (plus Django). There are plenty of PHP shops with nasty code bases thinking (even if only superficially) about developing to those languages and frameworks. Even if that never actua

For the past few months, I've been going through this exact process, moving from NYC to Boulder. The in-person interview requirements are the biggest challenge. A few companies are willing to fly you out, some not. Many will ask you to get

I would suggest pre-caching the conversion results for a bunch of popular sites. Grab the Alexa top 1000 or something. Basically, I can understand why my random site takes a little longer, but not big, fast, popular sites.
