You could make the download and docs public, but require licensing for commercial projects, ala HighCharts (your pricing model may differ).

I watched this guy's videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/jonmervis/videos?view=0 I also learned a few things while shopping: 1. You need to see the diamond in person. 2. Size is easily quantifiable, but sparkle/pop is more important. See

I'd try a couple pages and see how it goes. Adding in Bootstrap, Foundation, or Skeleton is typically just a matter of adding some HTML wrapper divs and CSS classes, assuming your starting point is a relatively simple DOM structure and CSS

Skeleton was updated in late June, so it's still being developed as far as I can tell. We didn't know what to expect, in part because we hadn't previously researched the history of each framework. But you're right, the results are inline wi

We're working on a follow-up blog post soon with more detail. Bootstrap has a lot of great UI components - form styles, tabs, dropdowns, etc. It looks good, it's consistent, and easy to prototype. But our client work involves highly customi

A few conclusions: * Foundation has the best responsive grid support * Bootstrap is the most expansive UI. For internal tools, that's great. For client sites, we end up fighting to override Bootstrap. * Skeleton is really light. If you're p

My team compared Bootstrap, Foundation, and Skeleton in detail: http://responsive.vermilion.com/compare.php We built the same layout (a real client project) in each framework and compared notes. That process really helped us understand th

You may also want to consider directly marketing yourself to web agencies. Many agencies use freelancers when they have an overflow of work.

Most agencies that size do very little testing. Typically any testing is manual and done by a mix of developers and account managers. Not saying that you have to operate that way, but be aware that automated testing is a relatively foreign

It's largely a question of internal standards and maintenance. If everyone else is writing PHP and you decide to build a site in Rails, you're creating a maintenance problem for everybody else.

I'd recommend writing some parsers (in python, ruby, perl, whatever) for large data sets ( http://www.quora.com/Data/Where-can-I-get-large-datasets-ope... ) It will probably speak to your analytical side and teach you stuff like string ma

The article is poorly worded. The point is that retina 2x graphics do require more bandwidth. As retina displays grow in popularity, bandwidth may become an issue. It's certainly something developers should consider when thinking about site

Then do something like hxa's example. Maintaining a return variable isn't always bad, it's just weird to think of it as functionally better than multiple returns. I tend to find a lot of errors and bugs in heavily nested code because it inv

I was comparing what I frequently see vs what I'd like to see. Your example code is pretty rare in my experience. So I think the comparison is pretty fair.

I've seen a lot of heavy nesting caused by the belief that functions should only have one return statement. Ex: // Original function render() { $return = null; if($condition1) { if($condition2) { $ret

You have two ways to value yourself - time and money. I worked in NYC and had a +3 hour rountrip commute. Moving to Boulder, my roundtrip is 10 minutes. I regained 3 hours per day. That's 750 hours per year or 31 days. IMO, nobody sits on t

I'm normally active. I thought standing all day would tire me out, discouraging me from normal exercise. But it's been the opposite; I'm much more inclined to exercise after work now. Probably because my leg and back pain have disappeared.
