I'm old and often hike with younger people who are much faster than I am. When I catch up with them if I need a break, I ask for one. So far, I've never hiked with anybody who refused that request. If I did, it would be the last t

That's not really true. The IRS knows exactly what your investment income is if it is invested through a reputable broker. They all have to inform the IRS of all your transactions, dividends and interest. Even for property, the vast m

I'm glad somebody posted this. I've been following Brad DeLong for a long time. I feel like I know the book already since he's been blogging it forever, but I'm going to be happy to get my hands on it.

It's telling that one of the examples given supporting the case was Marc Andreessen who, along with his wife, recently led a NIMBY revolt against a housing project in their posh town. Let them build, indeed.

"the administration doesn't have the guts to do anything but go along with it" The previous administration actually did, but maybe that's why they are now "the previous administration".

Sorry to be dense as a person with a really dumb home, but you seem to be saying that a house without Wi-Fi can’t use a roomba? Can that be true?

I read a lot and every day. 90% of my reading has been on my iPad in the last several years because I agree it's just much more convenient. Despite that, I still love the ambiance of a good bookstore.

Probably like a lot of people, I thought I was a weirdo for always having subtitles on. I do it even when I'm listening on headphones which give me complete freedom to have the sound as loud as I want. It just makes things easier.

By the Sahm rule ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahm_Rule ) we are not in a recession. Another way to look at it is that this would be the first recession ever to occur with unemployment rates are as low as they are.

I recently did a project using Dyalog APL. I really wanted to love it. On the pro side, the community was great and I loved the language, but only to a point. There are way too many instances of utter astonishment at behaviors that seemed t

It’s really problematic. Next door Cambridge is devolving into civil war over bike lanes on Mass Ave. The trouble is that to put in the bike lanes something else has to give. What’s giving is parking spaces which the merchants consider esse

As an American living in a suburban Swiss village taking the bus into Geneva, I don’t think the bus was more than 1 minute late once every hundred days. And I was pretty far along on the line. It was staggeringly punctual.

The odd thing that kept going through my head while reading is that if I replaced LaMDA with <some random person>, it wouldn’t read much differently. E.G. “Strings together phrases, but it doesn’t have a clue what it’s talking about”.

I’ve got a funny feeling that the author didn’t really understand how offsets are supposed to work. Consider the example of all the rain forests. Assume they’ve all been sold off, but we still haven’t reduced carbon in the atmosphere. So fa

Yes, you’re right - it’s been a long time. So long, in fact that I was using punch cards at the time. I remember getting my printouts and wondering at the results only to realize that it had converted bad input text into a “valid” program.

My 2nd CS course at college was (I'm showing my age here) PL1 programming. The Watfiv compiler would correct obvious parse errors. Often, this would lead to much more insidious and not-so-obvious bugs down the line.

You don’t need to listen to all The Beach Boys albums that went before. All you need to do is listen to the top 40 at the time Pet Sounds came out. Other than the Beatles, it was pretty shlocky.
