To the cultural point I'd add one. I'm an American who worked in Europe in the 2003-2004 era for an American company managing European developers. There was a very strong feeling - as in much stronger than I'd ever experience

Exactly. Three things that should be on the front page of any new language: 1) examples of syntax (check), 2) quick start instructions (check), 3) short description of motivation/rationale including what other languages were considered

This seems like cool technology, but I can't help but to believe that people are concentrating on the wrong problem. Range is important up to a point, but the more important problems to solve are 1) a recharging infrastructure that mak

You're comparing a sports sedan with a pretty normal sedan there. The fact that the model 3 can compete in the same league at all with the BMW has to do with the lower weight distribution caused by those batteries. It's not as sim

Politics proceeds slowly. The first step for a tech aware politician like Sen. Markey is to raise awareness of the issues with his colleagues who otherwise have many other priorities. That's how laws get passed.

Personal anecdote: I moved from my red home state over 30 years ago for these same reasons. A huge number of the people I know in my current and previous blue states have been, like me, transplants from red states. Many came for the jobs, b

I use cash all the time. But then, I'm old so.... But, this statement: "Fiat currency, on the other hand, holds value just because a governing entity is endorsing it" just isn't true. I see it bandied about a lot by peop

Isn't the actual problem that geographic regions within time zones have wildly different natural times? E.G. Bangor Maine and Detroit Michigan are in the same time zone. The sun rises and sets almost an hour earlier in Bangor than it d

The author, Joy Buolamwini, had an article in this Sunday's Boston Globe Ideas section that explores the same topic. It was extremely well written and enjoyable to read, but unfortunately reached exactly the wrong conclusions. In prett

And yet, there are lots of businesses that give a discount for cash specifically because of that 3% fee. Yes, I know the standard trope is that it's so they can avoid taxes and in some cases that's surely true. But, for many, if n

I'm probably overthinking this, but the article makes me think about the infamous 10x programmer. If, as seems reasonable, the ability to program successfully depends on a number of factors (raw brain power, spacial reasoning, educatio

Even so, putting on Rawl's Veil of Ignorance, if you were in the bottom America, would you choose to be in a lottery that would place you, randomly, in another situation? Sure, you might end up a living in a chalet in the Swiss Alps, b

Given that SBF had worked at Jane Street, it seems strange that he either didn't know about martingales or believed they didn't apply to him.

Maybe the better question is why is this even needed? As far as I can tell it's only needed because of corn to ethanol refining which itself is a technology that probably shouldn't exist: https://www.sustainabilitybynum

A lot of financial data is of dubious quality. Lot's of spurious data points, mostly in the extremes, just aren't real. Median is useful for many things, but sometimes you just have to get rid of the bad data to get a valid mean.

Absolutism isn't the point. We all know that there are limits - the classic example of yelling fire in a crowed theater. And as somebody below pointed out, no country has full freedom of speech and while that is true the US does have f

Very few countries have freedom of speech enshrined quite as forcefully as it is in the United States. One really has to wonder where this is going to go? I understand why they want to do it, but once a censorship regime is established it w

There's got to be an xkcd strip on the trajectory of computer languages: 1. Starts out fast, compact and lightweight. 2. Bugs and corner-cases get fixed. 3. Features demanded by users get added. 4. No longer fast, compact or lightweigh
