There is one problem though. That happens a lot (I have homeless Syrian people in mind) but the government does not allow them the right to work so they can't get out of poverty.

You (or them) being a bad programmer or not is not really the question (even though you seem to be right). I think you should step back from the code and talk to the people. Ask them why they did something like this or like that. Show them

To be fair, pre-lockdown I use to have an hour long commute and that would allow me to study Japanese close to two hours a day and still let me a lot of time to look after my baby once home.
