It sounds to be a PrestoSQL-like solution based on the Postgresql FDW.

Predicate pushdown is one of the first optimizations implemented in SQL planners and all the OLAP and OLTP solutions that I'm aware of already have this feature in place.

CTEs solve the problem to some extent only for the data-sources. You often need to have snippets, expression functions, being able to compose multiple expressions, be able to compile SQL queries that are both efficient and readable if you w

I agree with you, Looker is awesome but it's far from perfect. It does solve most of the problems in a convenient way but as the data modeling gets more and more complex and they're not going to able to iterate the product at that

RDBMS doesn't work but columnar databases such as BigQuery, Snowflake, and Presto make it work. I agree that web/product analytics data is hard to get it done the right way thus people rely on specialized solutions such as Mixpane

Correct but the problem with raw SQL is that it's not composable easily. LookML essentially provides that composability on top of SQL.

The columnar database engines are powerful enough to answer the ad-hoc questions so you often don't need to materialize the summary data somewhere else or use BI tools such as Tableau that fetch the data into their server and let you r

The main reason is that it took tens of years to build Google Analytics as it is and Google has the advantage to be able to provide more information about the user such as demographic data (gender, age, etc) since they have all the data in-

That's correct but there is also an alternative approach. You can track your user event data into your database using an open-source solution such as Rakam API ( https://github.com/rakam-io/rakam ) or Snowplow ( htt

I see the point but I don't agree with the author. If I'm not mistaken that it took more than two years just to build their product and they're still pivoting in a way that they can monetize their users. I'm not actually

A user can land your page from multiple referrers (or the same) more than once and some search engines including Google will hide the referrer information so the calculation will be off IMO. The regulations are not strict if you're not

I tried using Spring with Kotlin last year but it felt verbose as if I'm writing Java so we decided to implement support for Kotlin in our in-house Netty-based server ( https://github.com/buremba/netty-rest ) and us

People usually get confused when we tell them that we're using Kotlin for our backend APIs. I can't blame them because we attended KotlinConf last year and almost 90% of the audience were using Kotlin on the Android platform. Hope

While I tried to use Lombok in Java 8, it never felt safe. Even if I enabled the integration with the IDE, it magically patches my code under the hood so it wasn't easy for me to catch the bugs introduced by Lombok. > There is littl

While the cohort tables seems easy to understand, it’s not actually easy to write SQL queries that generates those graphs because of the way SQL works. That’s probably the main reason why most of the companies continue to use the tools such

I see. We actually develop a BI tool similar to Looker but also want to implement a data catalog feature embedded into it. I'm familiar with Amundsen but I believe that this kind of tool needs to have tight integration with the BI tool

We use Segment for event tracking, Postgresql for transactional data and a number of spreadsheets and third-party integrations with Stitchdata. Since our data is relatively small, we use PG as a data-warehouse and heavily use DBT for ETL.
