Nice to see a new columnar data format alternative. Just a quick question though. The existing columnar data formats such as Parquet and ORC aim to be space-efficient since the data is stored in disk and IO operations are usually the bottle

Use OpsWorks if possible. It's free and provides a simple interface that allows you to deploy/upgrade your apps automatically and monitors your instances automatically using CloudWatch.

I think that this is direction of analytics and we'll see products similar to this one in the next few years. The analytics companies realized that they can't answer all the questions their customers ask so they started to add thi

I couldn't really understand how you replaced Mixpanel and other analytics services with Redshift. AFAIK Redshift is optimized for bulk inserts so the micro-batch approach (a few seconds) is not is not optimal and in fact quite expensi

If you use ByteBuffer, then yes, the application may suffer from unnecessary checks. However the performance of ByteBuffer is not usually good enough anyway, that's why people use off-heap buffers (sun.misc.Unsafe) which is a native ca

This is why bytecode generation is used by query engines. They don't meant to be used for creating ArrayList or HashMap. Generally, they work with buffers instead of objects to avoid the issues you mentioned and garbage collection pres

Most JVM-based query engines uses bytecode generation and once JIT compiler decides that the code block is hot enough and can generate native code for generated bytecode, the output is identical to C and C++. The author actually indicates t

It's strange that the service looks quite promising but I don't know any company that uses this service. Isn't it mature enough (it's actually kinda strange argument for a managed service though) or is it hard to use? I

It seems that the Docker issue is memory overflow in container. I tried to run the docker image in a 512mb Digitalocean droplet that already runs several processes that also consume memory so I think it's expected considering Metabase

I couldn't run the Docker image, it seems that the Java process running in docker image doesn't bind the port 3000. Also tried to deploy to Heroku but when I try to access the application via url, Heroku throws 503 error.

I'm not sure if it's possible or not but you may try to create an organization for your application and create repositories in that organization. Maybe you can avoid requesting private repo access using this technique. (Mixpanel u

I'm not sure about that because they say that SPICE is an in-memory query engine unlike BigQuery which is a distributed query engine that fetches data from a persistent distributed file-system. It seems to me more like Spark in-memory

The web client requires my phone to be online and doesn't support offline notifications so that it has to be open all the time. I guess it's very much like Pushbullet for WhatsApp, not a desktop app for WhatsApp.
