Robotics and virtual worlds? To me, the "web" (as in web developers), is really about UI programming (html), system communications protocols (e.g. XMPP, SOAP, HTTP), and data persistence (rdbms). Earlier on (a decade ago), there seemed to

Yes, it was a bit longer than necessary to make his point. I think the general point is that programming is more about information and system architecture and less about the details of one particular language. I tend to agree with this vi

I don't think he's referring to "virtual machines" (which I think tend to run one operating system 'within' another (ergo much more than the processor)). He's talking about programming languages which generally run in a virtual machine (e.g

I agree completely! Spend money encouraging innovation and solving tomorrows problems, not keeping the existing oligarchies on life support. Congress should be considering investments and negotiating term sheets like VCs (but they won't).

Yeah, I've been getting a hunch that there's some significant market manipulation going on over the past year. Particularly the strength in the dollar and the weakness of gold.

I think there's a more fundamental problem with any commentary (economic or otherwise) by mass media. It hardly seems objective these days. There's also a self-fulfilling prophecy problem with media coverage of economic information. If y

No, but it's funny that the compatibility pane suggests that since it sits on top of Oracle and MySQL you have access to your data... by integrating your normal apps at the database?

I'm concerned that this is the by-product of politicians "creating jobs". We should be focused on improving our global quality of life, not providing employment. Unfortunately this would imply lots of unemployed less skilled workers (e.g.

I've also found the following strategies helpful: Be less vocal. You might be right in your opinion on some matter, but, you don't always need to express it. Some things are okay to be ... less than ideal. Let people make their own mis

I'd prefer to see the government take even half the amount of money and offer lots of smaller grants/loans to innovative entrepreneurs to launch our country into the next wave of growth. That's where the new jobs and economic growth will b

Perhaps odd to comment on myself, but what if I (we) more liberally up-mod the on topic posts regardless of quality... Ideally (as others have suggested) we could vote on relevance separate from quality/agreement.

I'm disappointed that they don't have a try-then-buy option. There are plenty of sub $10 apps that I would love to try out and wouldn't mind paying for if they are good. But I don't like payng the money first and then learning that I don'

Yeah, some of the old School House Rock videos seem rather fictional to me these days (particularly "No More Kings"). I'd love to see a modern remix of that with some well chosen TV footage on YouTube.

Good point. I think user experience is important as well. But as demonstrated by many of arcane JavaScript emulators out there (vi, terminals, etc), I'm sure you could devise just about any user experience you would like in a simple web p

Do you really care about access to your applications (e.g. MS Word) or the functionality they provide (e.g. editing a document)? I think it's more likely just the functionality + the information. I think more likely Mac OS and Windows a

I think it's less about people using streams more (though I think that is true) and more a representation of what is happening to information. In the document (or batch) mode of interaction, you have full knowledge of some set of content.
