Groupon has a great network effect. They have 25MM users and tens of thousands of local businesses. It's not as good of a moat as FB but still damn nice. Also, I'd argue that FB has a very obvious monetization: advertising. They supposedly

Braintree is one of the most forward thinking payment providers out there. A good number of startups on HN have integrated with them (we have, too). They have an excellent policy about porting customer data (e.g., stored credit card numbers

The title of this blog post is sensationalistic. As described by the author himself, Yelp's actions seem completely justified. A burst of 15 positive reviews from new users in a short period would make a user like me suspicious. And assumin

Goog's 60% market share is understated, too. Yahoo and Bing often point search results back to their own networks (Yahoo & MSN respectively). So third parties like Mahalo probably see Google driving much more than 60% of their search tr

It may be out of necessity. Many merchant gateways that sites use to process credit cards require phone numbers to be published.

If possible, meet your prospects in person. Go to industry events, shows, etc. Have a 20 sec pitch NAILED. Practice it incessantly on friends and family--anyone should be able to "get it" no matter how technical the product. Tailor it to th

nice article on a yc company. the part i like best: airbnb is a startup that helps other entrepreneurs starting up by letting them monetize their space, albeit indirectly. nice!

in general, simplify. my 2 cents. take or leave: * severely cut down the copy up top. e.g.: Athenian Marble has specialized in cultured marble since 1969. We have 50 employees in a 67,000 sq ft facility to serve your needs! * add the A+ BBB

Shipping has gotten to be very efficient. There are studies that show that someone driving to a store (~15 miles roundtrip) produces a lot more carbon emissions than UPS delivering a package to their door.

We're beta users of Cloudkick too and these guys are great. The most impressive thing is that they constantly ask feedback and act on it too--the hallmark of a company that's going to succeed.

You may want to check out wikinvest.com. They also annotate stock charts but are taking a crowd-sourcing approach to it (they are a wiki after all).

Thumbs up on this list! I'll echo your points about discovery. Lots of amazing products occupy the long tail that I just don't know about. Amazon does a decent job with their "you may also be interested in" algorithm but they could make the

Disagree that no one buys clothing online. It's a massive industry. Agree that the process is broken. I know someone who orders multiple sizes and colors of a single item and returns most of it after trying it all on. Lot of obvious ineffic

Brevity is the soul of wit. I think a 1 page resume is essential. Even Gates or Jobs could have a kick-ass 1 pager. Exceptions include a need to list technical details like published papers/books, patents, etc.

Great idea--just makes a lot of sense. Some thoughts on UI: 1) Would be great to put listings front and center on the homepage. The idea doesn't need a whole lot of explaining (it's a good thing) 2) I wouldn't auto-hide the internship detai
