I'm fascinated by the dotted countdown clock at the bottom of the page. It took me a while to figure out exactly what it was, and I got lost in Wikipedia reading about how braille is represented in unicode, thinking it had something to

The best example I can think of is this ad for the original iPhone back in 2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=37f... I don't think I've ever seen a phone advertised by just showing

I agree with Gruber's central argument that innovation happens in small incremental steps, and I don't in any way think that 2013 was a waste of time, but you've got to admit that this has been a light year for Apple. Between

Apologies for our second-rate internet connections. Hopefully we'll see > 5 Mbps download speeds to residential buildings within my lifetime.

And believe it or not, some people do not use, like, or trust Facebook or Twitter. Yup, I'm one of those people. I don't use Facebook, and it's unreasonable to expect me to sign up for a Facebook account so that I can use y

Every generation has its war. My forefathers fought the great war of emacs and vi in the 1980s. Those were dark times, which many still refuse to speak of. When I think of the horrifying atrocities committed by both sides, the snarky BBS po

I've played with the beta, and it's pretty neat being able to have what almost feels like a desktop quality experience in a browser. It does have a bit of an iOS 6 feel to it with gradients and drop shadows, which is surprising.

Much like email, Twitter becomes noisier than it is useful if if it has too great a presence in your life. The root of the problem is the volume of people that you're following, so I'd start there.

Before drawing any conclusions from this, I recommend reading Gabriel Weinberg's response in the comment section. I felt considerably better after reading it.

Getting too obsessed with this can paralyze you though. It's clear to me how cringe worthy some of my earlier work is, and that leads me to think that I'll feel the same way in a few years time about the work I'm doing now. T

I use an iPhone 4 and Macbook Air as my main devices. One of the first comments on the Ars Technica page is "you're holding it wrong". It's a predictable joke, but I'll begrudgingly admit that I laughed.

This is a fantastic idea, and I wish other services (I'm looking at you Twitter) would follow suit. Your Yahoo ID becomes a part of your identity when using their service, so it seems reasonable that people will feel happier and be mor

You might find the genius lists go some of the way toward solving this problem for you. They try show things you're likely to be interested in, and don't show stuff you already own.

It certainly has been odd watching Apple this year. Normally the company announces something significant every few months, but in 2013 they've gone (almost) completely silent. The last product release of note was the 2012 iMac, which w

While we're at it, how about being able to AirDrop files between Macs and iOS devices? I'd love to be able to send a video to my iPad without dealing with iTunes. I also want world peace, m&ms for breakfast, and a pony.

My experience with the iPhone app has been pretty bad. Functionally it's passable, but from a design/presentation/aesthetic perspective it's just plain bad. The hamburger-button menu which slides in from the left overlaps the content, but t

I felt the same way about Wikipedia at first. An encyclopedia that anyone can edit? What could possibly go wrong? I thought Twitter was a solution looking for a problem too. Interestingly, Twitter's usefulness (at least for me) stems from

I'm hoping that when Marco says "I've sold a majority stake" he doesn't mean "I've sold everything". I'm a big Instapaper fan, and I'd hate to see someone else take over deciding the direction the service should move in. A big part of Insta

It looks like I'll be sticking with Fever[1]. The assigning-temperatures-to-posts thing seemed like a gimmick at first, but it actually works somewhat well, and you can ignore it if you want to. It also syncs with Reeder[2] on the iPhone/iP

I like to run my email on my server, but it’s a significant undertaking and I don’t recommend you do that. I agree with Ben on this point, but don't really understand why things are this way. In looking for a replacement for Google Reader

This is fantastic advice. Being small can be an asset, yet it's often treated as a liability. Sure, there are some things your company can't do because you don't have as much cash in the bank as Google, but there are some things your compan

The tipping point for me was Twitter's increasingly hostile approach to third party devs. I've been racking my brain trying to think of the first service that I used regularly that was shut down. Pownce maybe? (anyone else remember that?).

The full feed is essential. I have a handful of subscriptions that require me to click through to the site, and while I understand why an ad supported site needs to do that, it's still incredibly annoying. This is especially true on a smart
