Oh, that's true. Still, I think the wager is too scary for most people to accept for large values of n. Even if I set n=1M and have 10M when I'm 55, gaining the extra 10 million will make significantly less of a difference to my life than l

For me: n <= ~10,000. This isn't a very enticing wager--it seems like I have a lot more to lose than to gain. If I set n at, say, $1M, then I might win $1M, which would be nice, or I could end up with basically nothing, which would be d

A plain google search isn't very useful, but what MIGHT be useful is a google custom search that has all the sites you listed pre-included. (See http://www.google.com/coop/cse/ ). If you had that and included the most recent headlines fro

Perhaps learning from Facebook's mistakes... looks like the only thing open to non-partner developers so far is the Orkut sandbox, and even that requires approval. sigh ...

Can you add a search feature to the "Find Pets" page? Paging through 60 pages of friends isn't exactly my idea of fun... I think you should be able to use one of the built in fb:friend-selectors with some ajax to make it pretty slick.

I think that's potentially a great idea. Active.com is a pretty big website, so you'd have to carefully decide which parts of its functionality are important and which aren't. The social networking pieces sound pretty cool, but I wonder if

I think the privacy advocates have gone way overboard on this one. WHOIS is an incredibly useful database; among other things, it provides a way to find people squatting on your trademarks. There's a simple solution already in place for pr

From the article: "once Facebook goes public sometime in the next year or so." That seems amazing to me but I guess with a $15B valuation it's not absurd. news.YCers, do you think Facebook will IPO anytime soon?

Maybe you could try what Leonardo da Vinci did, and sleep 15 minutes every 2 hours. I haven't tried this yet but it's on my list... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphasic_sleep

Based on my experience this summer as the third programmer at a small startup, I have to disagree. If you already have something of a background (i.e., you know enough to at least hack together something that works) and are willing to work

You could also think of other ways to monetize your site/idea. Can you sell an enterprise version to businesses? (i.e. Google Enterprise Search) Do you have valuable information that hedge funds or someone else might want to buy? (some of t

That seems a bit counterproductive to me--if you know it's going to take more than 40 hours, then why not at least try to make an estimate? If you think that your weeks' work is going to take between 50-70 hours, then budget 70 hours and be

I'd strongly recommend making at least some sort of visual wireframe, whether it's in powerpoint, on paper, in dreamweaver, etc. Chances are you have a general idea of what you want the first version to look like, and showing the developer

Most startups _do_, don't they? That was definitely the case at the company I worked at over the summer. My normal hours were something like noon-2am... all-nighters weren't too uncommon either. Sometimes you're too tired to be productive,
