I don't think anything is preventing you or anyone else from plunking down $100 and testing Got-Its out for consumer use. I just wouldn't expect it to be greatly supported in the near term.

Just ordered a set. I've been hearing about this from Brian for years now and am so excited it's finally live and available for purchase. About to tell all my midwest manufacturing friends...

In this case yes, Brave's POV is that ads that are hosted and powered by the publisher you chose to read are in fact OK. Brave isn't anti-ads so much as it's anti-cross site tracking and ad serving.

Brave blocks 3rd party ads, i.e. ads served off-site. Reddit is one of the few sites to make the effort to host all their ad tech themselves.

They only published the investigations they did to win prestige and standing that would distract regulators from interfering with their monopolies over local advertising. Hardcore journalism has never been a moneymaker.

It's a tremendous piece of writing I've enjoyed many times over over the years but a troubling one. As best I can tell, this is the actual shot described in the excerpt you quoted. It's great but perhaps DFW embellished a bit

My dad was the first person in my family to start using it, loved it, told all the rest of us to use it and I liked it so much I spent the last year working there.

Thanks for sharing this, Peter! S11 represent. I think this sort of thing is tremendously encouraging to hear as everyone that's started a company has gone through phases like this. I know a few having that experience now!

I think it’s a huge market and it just wasn’t known how crappy and dev-unfriendly the existing players were. I wonder if the Segment guys had even heard of them when they launched or if they had and then cleverly categorized their product

The thing that jumped out to me was how well the team managed their psychology. They state that after several pivots they were in the dumps and running out of money...yet their launch copy for Segment was peppy, optimistic and ambitious.

This line of thinking implies that the actual raw product for the “new” SV consumer web sites, their silicon, is “young people sweat equity.”

Can someone else explain the story with "Ben"? Did he offend someone and thus get kicked off the rescue squad? I couldn't follow the reason why he was stuck sitting in a chair outside the cave.

No it is a baseless claim. Brave's never replaced ads and has no plans to do so. And yes, this was a UI mistake that's being fixed as quickly as we can to address valid concerns from users.
