Great piece. I got a chance to work with Douglas Engelbart several years ago and wrote up some responses in reply to Maarten's IA or AI post: http://codinginparadise.org/ebooks/html/blog/ia_vs__ai.html

This and the convolutional neural net class were offered at Stanford both physically and online. Is anyone aware of anything similar being offered this fall quarter?

Do you know of non-DARPA organizations doing the kind of high-risk, high-reward work DARPA does but without the military angle?

Are the reported success metrics on the training or testing set? The website says its on the training set, which shouldn't be a valid metric of success since neural networks can easily overfit to their training data (one of their downs

I'm looking forward to people applying this result to Recurrent Neural Networks for speech recognition tasks. What do you think?

It's at the lower level character rather than word level which is unique. The convolutional net also doesn't need to be told what each word's role is, but rather learns that feature itself.

Great article. I've recently been self-teaching myself machine learning the same way. I found that it started to get difficult in the middle of the course staying on track. I decided to "scratch an itch" in open source parlan
