Who is "you"? The US government doesn't reflect the majority of Americans, at all. It reflects capital interests - which the majority of Americans are not. Majority of Americans are laborers.

Yes but I took the time off somewhat intentionally. I spent 3+ years not working. I tried finding work in NYC for a couple of those years but it never manifested. It got to me in the end and I got tired of some issues I was having in NYC. I

I'm currently in the bay area in a 1950s home with no AC, no insulation, and single pane windows. Do you think that's what I want? No but I can't change it because that's what is mostly available on the rental market in

I’ve been the hiring manager too. You’re severely underestimating how many people operate.

Everyone misunderstands what LC focuses on. It focuses on - did you grind like everyone else that did to get into this company/region/tech? It allows for people who didn't go to the most specific schools (e.g. Cal, Stanford,

I'm routinely asked LC Hard questions in interviews. Sometimes more than one in one 45 minute interview. That said, I interview in silicon valley and I'm a mixed race American. (extremely rare here) I think a lot of people just do

Why is no one blaming the parents? We cannot control everything but that no one even gives a thought as to how the parents were acting seems strange to me. Maybe readers here see too much of themselves in the parents. If so, I worry for you

I might get shit for this but 1.5m is a lot but for people who are relatively early at OpenAI - a $500B company - it’s not. I would be surprised if most engineers hired 3-4 years ago are not on paper at least worth $10m in NW. When I worked

You can’t even get money back from PG&E. At most, they’ll neutralize your bill every month to near zero. Any excess you create is typically not credited or rolled over. They really discourage solar in a variety of other ways as well.

With electricity hitting rates around $0.70/kwh with PG&E - gas isn’t usually a more expensive way to heat water. PG&E in CA is criminally expensive. If you’re lucky to be in one of the cities in the bay that isn’t on it, you g

What’re you doing to move the pan all the time? If you’re working with a wok and doing a lot of fast paced work you’d find in a restaurant, I’d understand because induction wok surfaces are hard to come by in the US. But I don’t get it othe

Can anyone who is from India or China explain why the type of person who goes to SV and works in tech from these two countries is so wildly different than the type who goes to NYC and is from those two countries? It’s a massive cultural dif

I’d like to see percentage of tech workers in SV that were American citizens then vs now. Regardless of whatever cap we talk about - it’s quite obvious that this has changed dramatically over the last 20 years for those under 40.

Do we think that wages in non-major cities are competitive? They’re not. Either way, you’re asking for people to leave the regions they’ve built their life.

My point is more that you can’t afford a typical home in Silicon Valley or many other major cities in the US on a single non-faang income. If you happen to luck out and get a partner with a high income - congrats, not all of us are blessed
