Great concept but the execution isn't as good as mobile competitors like JQuery Mobile which is pretty but incredibly simple for anyone with basic HTML skills to build something with.

The ratio of social companies to success must be crazy. So many more people building Foursquare for X instead of building the next Kickstarter, Square, Skype or Spotify. Kickstarter isn't that crazy of an idea or even to build but people ar

TechCrunch tends to only cover startups for a reason. They won't just say "This startup exists". They'll say you reach a certain number of users, raise money or do a deal with a major partner. Why should they cover that a new social app or

I hope people aren't put off from the Crowdfunding model thanks to kickstarter. All they have to do is bolster up their accountability tools to improve the current experience massively. Maybe show the likelihood of complication based on pas

I believe Code Academy was around before DevBootcamp, since they've been around for a couple of years now. They teach more than just Ruby, they have a co-working space and are based in Chicago.

This is a great format to display it in as it's so honest, you've embedded all of the first hand sources instead of writing out a polished story of how you were formed and your story thus far.

I think it's a shame that Reddit sold so early but at the same time they can think of the users (Until Conde Nast gets involved). There's no question about their valuation and how they'll monetize. They as a company can work on that and bui

For those of you interested in hearing more about this, there's a great episode of the podcast Framerate where they talk to Andy Armstrong, who was behind all of the streaming of the BBC olympics. There's some really interesting tidbits in

Sure but it wasn't a big startup event but a small event for teens looking to get into tech. He had little incentive to lie and put that much effort into personally conversations.

Interesting, I saw one of the founders talk about the company a couple of weeks before this was announced and they were heavily promoting the company, felt like things were going well for them.

I met a delightful recruiter earlier at an event, they understood the startup ecosystem, don't cold call and only caters to startups and with applicants that fit in the startup atmosphere. More recruiters should look at people like her as a

Impressive stuff, although the book promotion page looks slightly off. Reminds me of those 'free make money' ebook pop-up's I got in 2005.

"Lately VCs haven't come close to generating the returns on their investments that made them stars in the 1990s." That's because it was in the height of the internet bubble. Companies have to work harder and show real revenue. People may no

I'm not talking about Apple and iTunes merging but Live Nation (That owns the rights to the musicians and puts on the shows) and Ticket Master, who sells the tickets).

The visa waiver allows for business purposes but it gets complicated. Many go for three months, return for a while and then go back or sort out their full visa. The YC program is only 3 months long so it's not a huge problem for many. You d

Sadly there's very little space for startups to fix this. Live Nation/Ticket Master have a monopoly. I'm not sure how on earth they were allowed to merge. It's like merging all of the record labels with Apple/iTunes. Yes, you can buy ticket

The sad thing is I've seen hackathon's happen that have similar terms. One was a student one where 50% of whatever anyone made would be owned by the founder and he had the right to invest if he saw fit.

This is a great idea if not too expensive and implemented correctly. (Clean and wakes me up for my flight). I was trying to get my fairly liberal school to put hammocks in. I had a lesson at 9am and then at 2pm, sometimes I had little to do

Only complaint is that it looks blurry on the Retina MBP. All of the text and images, mostly the posts rather than the menu bar. I like the product but would love more discovery features as other users have said.

It's a bad idea to take a startup idea from this list and attempt to make a company out of it. You have to find something you're passionate about or something you want to fix. I seem to come up with ideas daily which was somewhat of a probl

This is how I'd fix the problem, create an app that reminds one to avoid drinking a coffee. http://i.imgur.com/FkNSU.png Then you can continue using the analogy and make sure users actually value your app.

If the product was seriously making money and growing then they should've raised money. The problem with bootstrapping and growing a team like this is if you have a bad month you can run out of money near-instantly. You have little runway.
