Yes, I always thought it was wrong to use unwrap in examples. I know, people want to keep examples simple, but it trains developers to use unwrap() as they see that everywhere. Yes, there are places where it's ok as that blog post expl

Notice that INTELLIJ uses its own UI framework, really, which I don’t think has much Swing left in it after all these years. And Kotlin is the main language for a decade now.

Every Java app these days bundles a JVM . It was made easy with jlink like 10 years ago. Only parts of the JVM are included so it’s lightweight.

Yep, it's hard to believe it exists for free and with not a lot of ads when you have a good ad blocker... though the content creator's ads are inescapable, which I think is ok since they're making a little money in exchange f

Bummer, I thought for a second that we had found a magic bullet for all our concurrency problems!

It would be a lot more constructive if you reported a bunch of corner cases where this doesn't work rather than just dismissing this as a toy.

Doesn’t that constitute impersonation, or is it allowed since it’s supposedly obvious to be parody?

Yeah but is that a practical language people can use instead of C and Rust? I’ve always heard of it only as a research language that inspired rust but nothing else.

Which ones?? Before Rust, to my knowledge, no language had an actually practical way to use lifetimes and borrow-checking so that both memory safety and concurrency safety (data races, which is huge) were solved, even though the concepts we

The other side of that is that sometimes you just can't win, no matter what. You may end up wasting your life trying and trying anyway. Recognizing when to stop trying is just as important, I think.

I tried to contribute a bug fix to a Common Lisp project and found this exact issue. In CL you can trace methods but if the call hierarchy is several dozen levels deep with multiple type overrides and several :around, :before and :after com

Yep. Look at IntelliJ. It just copied VsCode when it already had a great UI where things were easy to find and consistent. Now it’s got meaningless icons and hides important stuff by default, making it modern but far worse than before. Than

The copilot plugin with Claude models (Sonnet models) is very integrated in the IDE, and so is Jetbrains AI (even more integrated than Copilot) which I believe can also use those models. So I wonder what's the actual difference.

Theres a plugin for Claude Code and you can use Claude models from Copilot in IntelliJ. Are those options worse than Zed, especially considering other comments about Zed missing basic editor stuff?

I have 64GB of RAM and between IDE, some Docker containers and a local LLM, that started feeling like too little already. It’s just never enough, we always find creative ways to use every byte that’s available. Oh and the browser (any brows

The desktop app is very good for quickly attaching pictures and documents, or receiving them, I find it harder to do that on the phone app , and a web app just doesn’t work very well when you want it open all the time. Same with Slack, havi

If you have a product and a team working on it, it’s tempting to just keep adding things to the product. You can’t just sit around fixing bugs, they say. When that is precisely what customers would want. Can’t make upsells though and when y

I agree with you, once you have a terminal emulator like the one described in the post you are close to reinventing eMacs. Many have tried over the years, no one succeeded so far.

I live in Europe and I am not sure what’s so terrible about us falling behind the US. Are people going hungry? Having a hard time finding a place to live? Traveling to nice places?? Not even that in my view. We live a happy fulfilling life.

Doesn't that code ignore errors even if it runs out of retries? Don't you want to log every Exception that happens, even if the transaction will be retried? This code is totally rotten.
