Maybe I’m out of the loop, what happened there?

I had this issue as well - Amazon (did?) have a bi-directional USB-C to DisplayPort cable [0], which works well for me. It looks like the 3ft one is still available. [0] - https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B081VK1KH

I had that experience with OpenBSD as well. The summer after university I played around with it on a HP Chromebook 13 G1, fixed a bug that broke it's eMMC storage and wrote a touchpad driver - which ended up working more reliably that

That’s not really true. Any device with USB-C video out is using DisplayPort, not HDMI. HDMI alt mode exists, but AFAIK never shipped in any products.

This is such an annoying limitation. With monitors it’s one thing, as DisplayPort is normally an option as well (though with an iGPU maybe not), but if you want to display on a high end TV? You need to go find an active DisplayPort -> HD

It’s also unfortunate since a UHD BluRay (>100Mbps) has a much higher bitrate than any streaming video service - Apple TV+ might be 30Mbps.

I understand why we ended up with touch screens but I do miss physical keyboards. Swipe typing is fast-ish - but only for dictionary words, not punctuation, etc.

Not 64 channels, but for 32 channels I'm a fan of the DSLogic U3Pro32 [0]. DreamSourceLab did historically violate the GPL license of Sigrok, but have since made the source code for their fork available [1], unfortunately last i checke

> As an aside: Why can't DSL modems be a single USB dongle? They definitely existed in the UK for a time and were often supplied by ISPs. IIRC they were only supported in Windows XP, and drivers were never provided for Vista.

There is an M.2 slot, though only PCIe 2.0 x1. Possibly still good enough for reasonable bandwidth.

I never had a McIntosh whilst living in the UK but since moving to BC they've become a firm favourite.

I'm a big fan of a McIntosh, and pretty easy to find in BC. The apple ranking site also rates them poorly, with which I disagree.

I would be pretty content if I could run macOS in a VM on an iPad, the core HW is near enough the same and macOS supports paravirtualised graphics, and yet...

I would love to be wrong, but I can't find anything that suggests USB webcams work on USB-C iPhones - I did try in the past for different reasons but couldn't find any way of making it work. Some USB-C thermal imagers do claim to

I had that issue with both AMD and Nvidia with the open source and proprietary drivers respectively. If I ran both at 60Hz it was fine, but my primary monitor is 144Hz and I couldn’t make 144Hz and 60Hz work well under X11.

In my experience Wayland has been a better experience than X11, I have two monitors with different refresh rates and I could never eliminate tearing with X11 whilst Wayland works as expected.

I went out of my way to buy an old Sanyo radio alarm clock so that I don't have to rely on my phone or keep it on my bed side table. The neat flip digit display is a bonus. One dial to set the time, another to set the alarm.

If you look at the UK for example, the physical network is publicly owned and maintained by National Rail, whilst the ToCs are (currently) mostly private. That said the ToCs are also going to switch to publicly owned over the next few years
