> What if I want to install/configure something that hasn't been Nix-ified? You can setup an FHS environment, this is often the strategy used when packaging closed-source binary packages. An example in nixpkgs is steam-run [0],

This still exists? You can also use JavaScript to script/extend and there is a native code API too. Note: I do work at MSFT, I have used these capabilities but I’m not on the debugger team. https://learn.microsoft.com/e

Having UEFI in some form means you can just boot your preferred Linux installer and install to disk, much as you would for an x86 device, rather that needing to get a specific disk image and dd it to an SD card.

I think I’ve settled on both being the answer - Hetzner is affordable enough that I can have a full backup of my NAS (using ZFS snapshots and incremental backups), and as a bonus can host some services there instead of at home. My home netw

Whilst not as fatal as a failing SSD, AMD also had a fun errata where a CPU core would hang in CC6 after ~1044 days. https://www.servethehome.com/amd-epyc-7002-rome-cpus-hang-af...

For completeness sake - uboot can also boot EFI binaries, though upstream won’t support GOP video on RK3588, and is also device tree only so no Windows, just Linux and BSDs. https://docs.u-boot.org/en/latest/develo

There are some Linux distros with ZFS as a near first class citizen. NixOS is one, I believe Alpine is another.

I’ve run games on Linux with success but these days do most gaming in a Windows VM with an assigned GPU - and it works very well. Yeah aggressive anticheat won’t work - but I don’t care much about multiplayer these days, and have consoles t

Secure boot isn’t mandatory, and if you want secure boot you don’t have to use Microsoft’s keys, you can enroll your own. Lanzaboote for NixOS for example doesn’t use shim - https://github.com/nix-community/lanzaboote

If you can build your own Uboot you should be able to enable UEFI no? It’s not as full featured as EDK2 etc, but it works to boot Linux and I think the BSDs.

I guess you could run a Linux VM and pass the disks through? I considered something similar for an ARM64 NixOS build server - though that application doesn’t need the disks.

Anbernic cheaped out when trying to support USB host mode, as a result the device will not work correctly with an electronically marked cable. You can fix this - but you lose host mode - https://www.wirehead.be/2024/10&

Running them in a Windows VM with an attached GPU works great, I suspect you could use something like Looking Glass [0] as well - though I’d be nervous about colour profiles. [0] - https://looking-glass.io/

Adapting a PCIe slot to a single M.2 slot should always work, so long as the SSD is actually using the PCIe lanes and not the SATA port that M.2 can also support. Depending on how old the motherboard, or UEFI, is - it may not be able to dir

Is that really realistic? Apple very specifically allowed booting unsigned, and even non macOS, operating systems on their ARM devices. Sure - they don’t document the hardware, but making it possible was intentional.

Certainly agree on the chipset front - I went from an X570 to B650 which was absolutely a downgrade, the most painful being the loss of ACS on the chipset PCIe lanes.

Yep - I have a 9950X desktop. Building the kernel as part of NixOS builds almost every possible option as a module - for ARM64 that takes something like 15 minutes.

> As others have stated, plenty of websites have RSS feeds. It’s a bit of a mixed bag though - whilst some big websites still have an RSS feed, you can’t get the full article text, smaller blogs etc seem to be better in that regard.
