I still dream of a day that you could plug an iPad or iPhone into a dock and it turns into a full Mac. It feels like Apple is so close in so many ways, and they even have a fast enough iPad Pro today, it’s all down to software…

This is neat! I wonder if there would be value in having a repo for only GUI applications, equivalent to casks. I suppose it works best when the application doesn’t also auto-update, which many do.

You can also run nixos-rebuild targeting your NixOS machine from your Mac which is a neat trick - and it’s how I update my home server.

I honestly think there is real value here for firecracker style containers. Running memory safe code for your whole stack, with a minimal number of virtio devices? Fantastic! The permissive license would also be interesting in some applicat

Ah yes, that is true, SIP is more granular than testsigning on Windows...

So whilst three is different aren’t the analogues on Windows for 1) and 2) 1) Test signing - do what you want 2) Kernel driver - still possible, needs EV cert?

I only mentioned caches to reduce the amount of storage that would be read as storage isn't always very fast. That said the internal state is a valid concern, you'd need the involvement of hardware drivers as it's essentially

If you have an immutable system partition I wonder if you could boot, and then take a snapshot of memory (excluding caches etc) and save that to disk. On a reboot you would 'simply' load your RAM image from disk and everything wou

There are a couple issues tracking FreeBSD support for Nix [0,1], the package manager indicating it works there. Depending on the level of integration you want that might be sufficient, that would already be enough to generate the system co

Is OpenIndiana really better than FreeBSD or ZFS on Linux today? I’ve had a pretty great experience using ZFS with NixOS but I’m curious if I’m missing anything.

OpenBSD is definitely the free OS than I enjoyed running the most. I now use NixOS for most of my server and VM uses because I really appreciate being able to trivially keep all the configuration state in version control. However when I ran

I never really played LoL but that was my experience with Dota 2 - with the exception of the end of the game when the enemy team might well flame you if you're doing badly.

I wonder what it would take to build your own firmware image if you were reusing for exclusive alternative use? Presumably there is a Linux kernel tree somewhere and you could pull the waveforms from the Amazon image?

Agreed. I think Cloud Run is the more interesting product and something I wish other providers had similar offerings to. For someone wanting to make a prototype or such then having it scale to 0 is pretty great.

Apple do let you change the default now, but the engine must be the same.

Have you considered using an x86 machine with dual 10G NICs as your router, and then all you’d need is a 10G switch which may be cheaper than a router. I’ve considered the approach but haven’t undertaken it yet.
