Another option is to stick an authenticated reverse proxy in front of whatever you’re hosting. No software needed on the client beyond a web browser, and you only need to worry about say the security of Nginx…

My SLA is only to myself, so it’s not so bad. That said I do host some “critical” services like my password manager, and so making a mistake that takes those down can be a pain. I figure on balance it has been worth it.

It’s been a long time since I’ve used my ISP’s supplied modem/router. The only hardware from my ISP that I’m using now is their GPON SFP module, which is installed in the NIC of my router machine.

There are a surprising (or unsurprising depending on your perspective) number of hardware bugs out there. There are published errata that I had hit before they were documented. It’s not always very much fun - and leads to a lot of head scra

There is state shared between cores too though, at the very least L3, probably IOMMUs, etc. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if there are issues we haven’t found that exist there.

I feel like that became apparent with Spectre and Meltdown - they really opened the floodgates. I do wonder if there is some way to have formally proven correctness for speculation - a sort of analogue to the borrow checker in Rust if you l

I am inclined to agree. I do somewhat like it on my 13” MBP but do miss physical function keys. If they just let you do fn+num for the F keys it would be a big improvement…

I haven’t tried to run the simulator, but I believe you should be able to run the HW driver with it - and get the frame buffer output. I imagine it’d take some work to get it working on a modern OS. It’s the simulator that I suspect is deri

I'm not convinced that the license is the biggest motivator today for vendors getting code to upstream Linux. Look at LLVM - Sony has spent significant effort landing support for PlayStation targets there, the license doesn't requ

Imagination released the driver and simulator sources for PowerVR series 1 last year [0] which is a fun resource to see how tiling GPUs started. Series 1 is particularly weird because it doesn't use triangles, it uses infinite planes,

My home server is still a Gen 8 HP Microserver with a Xeon E3-1230 V2 - so also Ivy Bridge. I wouldn’t mind something more modern and lower power but it seems any alternative with 4+ front drive bays would be quite a bit more expensive - an

Do Xresources and friends make sense now Wayland is finally usable for many folks? Maybe having some sort of environment agnostic config would be good - even with Wayland - but I don’t know that a suitable one exists today.

I haven’t checked the changes here, but even if your FW carries a recent ucode at boot, you may find yourself wanting to update the ucode at runtime without a reboot. This is certainly possible on Linux.
