Some of the issues I had with 9550 XPS: - battery swelling - fan spinning on high speed for no apparent reason (not due to CPU load) - random wakeups while sleeping (happened in my bag once and the laptop almost overheated :( ). This was e

I like Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and the Shambhala approach. Some of his best books IMO: Turning the Mind Into an Ally and Running with the Mind of Meditation. I like his approach since it has a more modern appeal and his writing is very ap

Agreed - this is a good way to learn. Also for a little incentive take/study the 3 associate AWS cert courses on acloudguru and/or linux academy and then take the exams. These are good intros on most of AWS. You will learn some

If you can get something preloaded with Linux it is probably best. System 76 or the Dell precision line of laptops are good options. In the case of dell I would go precision over XPS - I believe you get better support and a better tested p

I agree somewhat here - however I'll counter with the fact that Apple has a monopoly lock on Unix desktops that work well. I'm guessing a good part of Mac sales are on the engineering/operations side (devs, sys admins, etc).

In regards to your 1st post - what happened to you is really unfortunate. I do hope things are better for you now. However, I have worked remote for over 10 years in a 100% remote workforce and the company did not abandon me. BUT I did ex

Probably fine - you just want to remain visible. Honestly, I think every company should encourage at least a few days a week of WFH for stress, employee health, traffic reasons - especially in IT where there is often no reason not to. You

My experience - I worked from home for 10 of the 15 years (so far) of my career. My biggest advice for anyone going this route: - keep active in the industry; keep making contacts; attending meetups/conferences etc ; prioritize network

Yes, it is easy to fall into this pit. I did this too and it was a huge mistake. I'm 1 year into looking for a job since I too have no network. Cold applications are not working :( So there is a lesson here... :)

Yeah, Maybe I got lucky. If you want to totally play it safe wait until 18.04 LTS is released. They should (hopefully) have this worked out by the LTS release.

I didnt bother - I set it up to only use the Intel GPU b/c I wanted longer battery life. Besides I don't game on the laptop anyway. I dual boot Windows (since the license came with the box) and can use that if I really want to g

I upgraded my XPS 15 (9550) from Ubuntu 17.04 to 17.10 about a week ago and have had no issues so far. Actually, I find it a little less buggy on my XPS than 17.04 was - overall I am pretty happy with it. Of course YMMV - my specs are bel

Same here - I had to end up using touchpad-indicator to fix this (disables the touchpad while typing). Its a shame it doesn't work out of the box and requires this hack.

Sounds like what I should have bought. How long have you had it? Any issues? I'm about to swear off Dell due to the XPS15 (9550) - this laptop has been a buggy mess since I got it: had to replace the oem wifi adapter for an Intel t

Yeah - that is sort of what prompted me to comment as well. I was able to do the same thing to an old 2008 Macbook unibody. After replacing the HDD with an SSD (easy to do and huge perf change) its a good box for everyday stuff.
