Yeah - the hw really has to be curated. I havent tried using a machine cobbled together from various parts (custom desktop), but off the shelf quality laptops work fine for me last 2 years or so and have none of the issues you mentioned.

IMO Fedora or Ubuntu. I've used Fedora now for the last few years on Thinkpads (currently Carbon X1 6th gen) and it has been pretty much "just works"

Hello neighbor! Fort Collins, CO checking in - municipal fiber, same service / speeds BUT we do have to pay $5 more per month. Oh well. :) Looks like quite a few other cities in CO are joining us soon..

I know Snap maybe offered tighter sandboxing, but why didnt AppImage take off? It seems like it solves the problems of deb/rmp/etc war and is easy to create for app devs...

Carbon X1 (6th gen ), I can get 8-9 hours light stuff and solid 6 doing work. That is pretty much equivalent to the macbook 13. I have a macbook 15 for work and am extremely disappointed in its battery life, so I think the Lenovo matches up

yeah - saw that a lot in bay area. Not that CO / Denver has great transit, but their solution is to have transit police on every train. They check tickets/passes and do rounds. Which does seem to reduce this...
