There is no standard anything anymore -- everyone is playing with business models left-and-right. As long as they clearly tell end-users how reviews are done, they could be using monkeys to write the reviews on papyrus. Can you ask them wha

All very good tips. I prefer a smaller font when hacking because I like to be able to scan more of the codebase, but I can see how it could force a person to tighten up the scope of their methods/functions.

500k/euros over 5 years savings? Sounds like a waste of time just talking about it. Did they actually factor in the actual costs of switching folks over? It's going to take more than a couple 50k/year employees to support a massive upgrade.

Wow, marijuana news is hitting a feverish pitch lately, especially with that most-winning "Olympian pothead" making news. I am glad to see studies like this being performed. If you are a pot smoker, keep in mind that taking smoke in your bo

Great data, although it leaves out some useful bits to the formula, such as how loyal readership is to a certain company or individual sending the email. If the email were going out to random folks, it would be a much more accurate survey.

Sometimes denormalizing a database is okay. But when you get into programmatically mucking with CSV data in a field, you probably have pushed things a bit too far.

The advantage Pixar has is that the environment has been created so that collaboration is easy. Everyone has a framework they've assimilated from previous Pixar generations that makes them pro-collaboration. Unfortunately, unless your emplo

Thanks for the insight. I didn't realize that CDN's like Akamai used a private type of network. Makes good sense.

Excellent! Thanks for taking the time to write up a more technical look at the changes you guys made. I'm still not clear on how Akamai helps speed things up. I understand how CDNs work: they move static files to edge servers that are physi

What media are you trying to deliver? Traditional CDN are very expensive -- like cell phone minutes, you pay up-front for X number of GB. If you buy 1000GB and burn 20GB, you still pay your $10k/month bill. Amazon is making a big play in th

I would have like to see some technical notes in there. It almost comes across like a glorified sales pitch for two products! First Joel says that they don't deliver static files and that edge caching won't help. And then they swap out some

Agreed, I'm surprised they decided to use a non-standard attribute. But it is a simple and elegant technique if you want to save the server from doing extra work it doesn't need to.

Man, who doesn't need an ordered hash from time-to-time? The big problem is that most people assume a hash isn't ordered -- so when looking at Ruby source, I wonder if this is going to be confusing for awhile?

After many years of flailing from side-to-side of the css/table argument, I've found myself doing what the author talks about -- simple table for layout, css for everything else. Keep in mind: there is more than css and tables in this equat

Most sites also used a backend with their own templating functionality. Often, it's surprisingly simple for a programmer to change out the look of the site by tweaking a simple template.
