One solution I advocate for is more widespread adoption of Chocolatey ( http://chocolatey.org ). I can cinst putty and get what I need automatically. Sure, I have to trust the maintainer, but you know, if more people used Chocolat

I've long argued that we, as tech folks, are not the target for tablets. The target for tablets are the Facebook Messenger folks. the people who want to watch videos and surf the web, chat with others, etc. You know, the same folks Del

It's not really hard to figure out. Read it as "99% of the students we chose to survey and who answered our survey said they had jobs." Survey your good students. Then throw another in there so it's not 100%.

One thing I do with my beginning programming students (since their programs are tiny) is make them write out "test plans" on paper before they can write their program code. They have to write the inputs and then the expected resul

This is really right on the money. If it's too hard to test then you've already found something really valuable - a problem with your design that will cause you friction later on. That itself might be worth a ton to you.

Exactly. This is the whole purpose behind the "spike" - make a branch, write a crap implementation of some code to help understand the problem, put it aside. Then go write the production version TDD style. Once you understand the

I agree with this. I currently teach beginning programming using JavaScript in HTML, and we currently just provide pre-made web pages for the students to write their basic programs in. They come in already knowing basic HTML as they've

Seems to me that the smartest thing to do is write your application independent of any framework. That way you insulate your stuff from the framework and it doesn't become the app. That's sort of the big lesson I've learned o

I agree with you 100%. I teach online and hybrid (part face to face, part online) courses. My students tell me they actively choose one or the other format. Some students cannot learn online and appreciate the ability to interact. I try to

I'd always used Ctrl-a in screen because it was the default. When I moved to tmux I just moved it there, but tmux lets me send the Ctrl-a key sequence through to those apps. So if I want to go to the beginning of a line in Bash, I just

I got mine on Amazon. Believe it or not, it worked first try and it turned out to be a Microsoft one. Drivers were not an issue once I figured out that some of my USB ports were powered and others were not - it needs a lot of power to work.
