So, I’m sort of curious to see what this price point does to the home battery market. The new LG Chem RESU 16h (16 kWh) is available for preorder at $8,400 [1]. The base model truck has a 110 kWh suite of batteries and seemingly will start

I assume it’s because they also do things like “movie ticket vouchers” (which are just paper). That way there’s one dedicated-ish room for all the gift card exchanges.

It used to be a lot more expensive! IIRC, they had a per thread-ish licensing scheme for a while (maybe blocks of 4 or 8 threads?). Lots of software did in the late 2000s. Then a few years ago, to stem the tide from Arnold (which was 1000 e

The argument is roughly "incumbent, economy, sexism" in that order. When things have recently trended positively (particularly with the economy), as they did in 1984, the incumbent almost always wins in the US. On Sexism, Mondale

Dewitt (hi!), this isn’t about an annual cash bonus though. This is for a “hit this target and we’ll do award X”. Given that a number of “achievement” awards are in the < 5k realm today at major tech companies, I think this should be com

I raise you GOES-17 aka GOES-West currently: https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/sector.php?sat=G17&sec... Though it’s a trade off! GOES has a really fast return (10-15 minutes, IIRC) but doesn’t do global and ha

Huh. I’d expected to see ray tracing-based foveated rendering in this article. I’m guessing they started their company assuming rasterization was the only option, and doing slightly different warps to end up with something vaguely fovea-lik

Can I recommend finding work in Go? It’s a good fit for “makes you type a lot of things” while being super clear what’s going on. It’s basically C with memory safety-ish and a good standard library that includes modern things.

Awesome! Any lessons learned? (The main one I’ve seen and worried about is sophistication of employees with their equity. Options are confusing! But that’s true whether it’s a single offer or multiple perspectives).

I think the overall sentiment is right for an early stage company: you don’t want any employees (including the founders!), worrying about covering their expenses. Personally, however, I would be more fluid than “constant dollars”. Some peop

Yeah, maybe in addition to my survivorship bias from RHEL6-era images, I am mentally conflating samples from “we OOM killed sshd” and “we are swapping violently; we won’t get in via sshd”. In fact, I would guess (especially given all this i

The OOM score isn’t strictly ordered by memory usage. The oom score adjustment is usually the cause. Amusingly, this finally forced me to find bugs like this one: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1071290 (All pro

Disclosure: I used to work on GCE (and was adjacent to the serial port work). IIRC, we launched interactive serial port access sometime in late 2014. For example, mbrukman answered a SO question on Jan 2, 2015 with connect-to-serial-port [1

Disclosure: I used to work on GCE (and even helped push our serial console access years ago). That’s a good default posture. What sucks is when you’re trying to debug a system that has OOM-killed sshd and then is behaving generally poorly.
