Reference counting really isn't that hard to follow. Cocoa's conventions are pretty straightforward. You need to release (or autorelease -- which by the way is great) for every call to alloc, retain, copy (inc. fooCopy), or new (inc. newF

C has no conventions for memory management. You've got malloc, you've got free, and the rest is up to you. Objective-C has an easy to follow pattern, reference counting, which is used consistently throughout the language and libraries. Crea

Not having GC on the iPhone is unfortunate, and I think there's a good chance we'll see it in OS 4.0. But Apple developers have a culture of not trusting garbage collection. It's irrational, but it runs deep through most of the experienced

This is incredibly naive. If you think all of 280 Slides is two toolbars and a dozen or so icons, then you have missed the point. Even the point you are trying to make is invalid, because this is perhaps 2% of the layout involved in 280 Sli

I can tell you its not anything new, and it's been around at Apple for a while now. It's in use right now on several live Apple properties. When and if it will be released in any usable form has yet to be made clear though.

I dislike IE6 as much as the next guy (more probably), but people should stop harping on Microsoft like this. IE6 created the first version of AJAX. It had browser based drawing primitives ages before anyone else. It turns out that IE filte

Sproutcore isn't something made by or supported by Apple, it's a project created by the individual who was later involved with the development of MobileMe.

Cappuccino is a completely client side framework. It requires nothing on the server. It is written in JavaScript and Objective-J (a small set of extensions to JavaScript). It uses no python.

We're not immortal, but I'm glad you think so. We strongly believe in open source software, and we want to be a part of it. Cappuccino is our way of doing that. Plus, with something this cool, we just couldn't keep it to ourselves :) But, f

There are almost certainly not 600,000 paying iPhone developers. I'm guessing that number is people who have downloaded the SDK (which is available for free). There are only about 35,000 apps, and the average number of apps per developer (w

No, setting a variable to undefined doesn't delete the object contained in that variable (and I never said it did). Neither does calling delete. Delete gets rid of the variable itself, not the object it contains, which is precisely what I d

delete can be useful, but it's not nearly as useful as it sounds. delete's only purpose is to remove a property name from an object. that is the only advantage it has over just nulling out a reference directly, and in most cases, the two te

280 Slides uses an asynchronous POST (or PUT) request for saving documents. Just because the mechanism for generating requests has changed, that doesn't mean the mechanics of REST should be thrown out the window. REST is useful, and its how

There's nothing "clean" about using a link. @import is an actually useful feature: the ability to define dependencies. "This file depends on another, which I've imported." Instead, using link tags forced you to push dependencies all the way
