Worth noting we aren't calling ourselves 1.0 yet. This is just our one year anniversary. Also worth noting that SproutCore 1.0 is still in beta, and almost a complete rewrite, rather than a stabilization of what was already there.

Not sure what you mean by lack of stable releases. Are you saying that the releases are not stable, or that the release schedule is not stable? I believe our releases have been fairly solid, but I do admit they don't follow any predictable

A lot of good points. About debugging, I would strongly strongly disagree. The Safari 4 / WebKit debugger is actually getting quite good. Add on top of that the profiler and support for native method names we added to WebKit, and you've got

They are very clearly making money. They are just spending more than they make. Revenue is still an important metric. Many companies which are supposedly successes still have $0 in revenues. Saying such a company is already successful is mu

Apple builds security against those types of attacks into the OS and the SDK. The review process basically adds no additional protection. Holes in the SDK which accidentally expose such features can still be exploited, and those exploits ar

Nobody is arguing those facts, and I don't think anyone at 37 Signals is naive enough to claim that you can't grow faster by spending more money (and going into debt, in whatever form). From where I'm sitting, the point is that such a compa

Unfortunately, I think you'll find a lot of the newer WebKit features missing from the Pre. For example, the canvas implementation is stripped down and lacks, among other things, gradients.

I find this incredibly hard to believe. 1.5 Billion apps downloaded in about the first year, generously 10% of those are paid downloads. 150 Million apps generating 2.5 billion in revenue? When reasonable estimates suggest that about 40-50%

Every security update Apple ships for Leopard it also ships for Tiger. And I preferred spotlight in 10.4. In fact, 10.4 was all around a much better OS than 10.5, which was the first update to Mac OS X that felt like a step backwards. Of co

Gruber makes many good choices, this being one of them. But his writing is overwhelmingly pro-Apple. You can call it being a fanboy or not, it's up to you. Separately, I'd probably be as inclined to believe the source as I would Apple's pub

Agreed. The iPhone is a good demonstration of combining a powerful development environment with always on connectivity (one of the more powerful reasons for being on the web in the first place). It's also a shining example of many of the th

Gruber consistently sides with Apple. He is, in essence, a fanboy. There are exceptions, and he's not a moron, so when there's community uproar and obvious stupidity he will say so. But his reporting is heavily pro-apple overall.

Exactly. We're talking about download ratios, not sheer number of apps available. And the total numbers are extremely lopsided in favor of free apps.

I think it's hard to make the claim that apps are more popular than websites on the iPhone. Unfortunately, it's hard to find data on overall mobile web traffic (or total web traffic in general), but over 60% of all web traffic from a mobile

I'm not really sure it is a minority, or at least not as much as it may seem here on Hacker News. I recall reading that the GPL is by far the single most popular open source license. Can't seem to be able to back it up though. Either way, s

Hey Koen! From the perspective of a person who chooses the GPL license for their code, the issue is that they want to the right to take your changes and then modify them as they see fit. The GPL prefers that right over everything else, incl

You're confused about who the user is in this discussion. The user is the end user of software, not the developer who is using your code. GPL protects the rights of end users, no matter how many developers sit in between the original code a

It's true that you can charge for GPL software. It's just not a particularly good strategy. Because invariably, that software will wind up easily accessible on the Internet for free, maybe even with a higher page rank than your own page.
