Replying here as I can't add on another reply below The way we do our monitoring/UI is with zeromq/protocol buffers as an external surface to the trading system (basically a PUB socket) and a very thin bridging and translation layer to WebS

Are you planning to run R in production, or is it purely for research that then gets translated to haskell?

Python is definitely preferred on the research rather than the production side generally. Some organisations do use it on the infrastructure side too, but these guys are algorithmic traders, and not HFTs so latency isn't that big a deal. WR

Have you considered python for the research/algo side of things? I work in a hedge fund in London at the moment and there's a massive shift away from R towards python in the algorithmic shops that I know about here. There's also the great w

Where do you work that you can just take a decision like "I'm going to use language X" if you don't mind me asking? How did you deal with concerns (which I assume your manager must have had) about skilling up the rest of your team, and your

You'd probably need one of the more heavyweight options (e.g. GHCJS). Fay doesn't understand typeclasses afaik, so it's not really suitable for porting haskell libraries verbatim to the browser.

It's not that bad, I'm a web developer too and I work in London at the moment. With my day rate I could probably fund a year in a cheap part of the world on 6 months work, but it would definitely stretch further if I could top it up with so

Why is it that big companies get this? In two weeks I'll be going from a nine person company when there's no working from home whatsoever under any circumstances to a ~250k person company where it's supposedly allowed. WTF?

That was a somewhat flippant comment... The guys who build the models have phds in physics plus advanced degrees in statistics and stochastic calculus etc. I understand the basics of how the system works, but due to my lack of that advanced

They aren't producing anything, but they are providing a service. Algorithmic futures traders are typically uncorrelated with for example the S&P so pensions funds use their services to smooth out volatility and generate better returns.

Algorithmic hedge funds trade on statistical models successfully. I work for one at the moment, and over the long term they expect to make 15-20% per year. We have no traders and there's no intervention - it's purely the statistical model t

Who's we if you don't mind me asking? How's your experience of snap been? I'm thinking of building a little SaaS effort on the side and would want to use Haskell for at least the backend, and maybe even the front end with fay.

Yes I've definitely seen evidence that Haskell has become a marker language on one's CV of the right attitude (somewhat taking over from python a few years ago). In fact one recruiter reported back that a client said "He's done some Haskell

That was very much the experience at a previous place I worked: they tried scala, but didn't really embrace it. They ended up with somewhat more concise Java code :-)

Anyone who's done some Haskell care to comment on whether scala is worth learning? I read the scala book a few years ago, then I decided to go to the source first and learn Haskell. However, I don't see many Haskell employment opportunities
