My understanding is masonry generally has less give and wood buildings can flex in the case of an earthquake. In fact it’s not to code in California to build with masonry without significant steel rebar reinforcement. It’s not necessarily d

A single AWS graviton server is roughly 128 cores with, I believe, 2x or 4x 40gbit networking. It’s not crazy really.

You’re definitely right. I meant 30W per cpu or less which usually means maybe 4-8 cpus per host or ~300W. I did mean to compare it to Graviton and will definitely look at the other contenders in this space.

I need… more powahhh… No but seriously why don’t they build a 128-core atom server. That’s really all anybody wants. I don’t need the fastest most immersed cpu ever, just a bunch of decent ones at 30W or less.

What's the defense against a hypersonic missile then? Current Aegis and CIWS defensive tech will not hit something traveling that fast. Surely the Pentagon doesn't even need to justify budget increases when we give them more budge

Itanium didn't work but not only because of hardware. They didn't invest nearly enough in developer relations, compiler tech, contributions to other compilers and working with Microsoft to ensure a good landing spot for their tech

A lot of people look at R&D and investment in things like fabs and process as the way forward but I feel like what you mentioned is the main problem. Intel has been leaking and practically ejecting their best and most experienced talent

Luckily video codecs also hardly change in an incompatible way after they ship. There's also varying levels of support that can be fully or partially HW decode/encoded and the pure CPU fallback. Intel's Quicksync is best-in-c

This depends on what type of attack it is. If it's volumetric, no amount of packet filtering is going to help you. If it's protocol-level attack then yes, some form of high performance WAF will be helpful if you have the filtering

That’s all great and amazing for the edge but not for general compute which the majority of applications still need. Yes you probably could design it with just workers but most popular frameworks just don’t lend themselves well to that and

Is that founded in numbers though? I always hear about people worrying about sabotage in the valley but I’ve found actual cases extremely rare. Not to mention most everything from code to data is engineered to be durable and reversible so t

This is definitely an issue especially with infrequently accessed functions but I've seen cold start issues regardless. I assume some scaling events will cause cold starts (measured in seconds). There's a good argument to go with

AFAIK, anything shared via iCloud is not original quality > When shared, photos are reduced to 2048 pixels on the long edge, except panoramic photos, which can be up to 5400 pixels wide. You can share GIFs that are 100MB or smaller. htt

You can also read that as trying to do both might be too broad for a smaller company to tackle. Apple is a clear example of how chip design and chip manufacturing don't need to be linked and may in fact hinder.

I have to disagree here. iCloud file sharing is atrociously bad. I share a fairly minimal amount of files with another apple account and there's constant sync issues, it's not anywhere near realtime or even "soon". Share

Actually I would say collaboration is a huge win. Right now we do shared screens when we have to do some CLI operation. I know and have worked at companies with very complicated setups for CLI-based workflows where you need 2 people to agre
