There haven't been layoffs at Red Hat after 2023, whereas according to your statement there should have been two more rounds. The layoffs from your articles are at IBM, and did not affect Red Hat.

They could still preserve it for backwards compatibility in microcode. They didn't do that because the 386 made it possible to get out of protected mode, and in fact allowed a more efficient implementation (big real mode) without undoc

Well I am not sure what other commercial distros you consider to be alive, but Red Hat makes Canonical's yearly revenue in a couple weeks. Outside IBM land, Meta runs on a CentOS Stream fork.

Not always. LOADALL was used heavily by Microsoft's HIMEM.SYS on the 286, but was not preserved on subsequent models.

Lilypond, too. Though it needs a full scheme interpreter to evaluate macros (provided by both the system and the user), it can emit midi files.

The unexpectedly hard bit is switch statements, which are the main case in which compiled code has two back to back jumps... therefore the input flags come from a different basic block and you don't know which instruction generated it.

SETP is used rarely to compute parity, though it doesn't really save anything if you can use POPCNT. PF is also used by floating point comparisons with a different meaning though that is not useful for the Arm extension from Apple. AF

Yes, I didn't say that sigils went away. But for example in Perl 6 lists are @ whether you declare or access them, instead of the sigil changing depending on what you want to get out of the expressions. It says it in one of the first a

You can read more about the organization of the work and how it's split between kernel and user space at https://www.collabora.com/news-and-blog/blog/2025/08/06/writ... .

It's just a completely different model. Scalar context vs list context. @x returning length vs $x[0] accessing the list. It has a logic but it's its own logic. Not unlike Rust's borrow checker but at least with Rust you know

Even assuming this does have a measurable performance effect for the kind of processors you run Linux on (as opposed to something like a Cortex-M), you only need to have load-big-endian and store-big-endian instructions.

I think the kernel remains big endian. Only userspace has a brand new little-endian ABI.
