Overwhelmed by traffic now. I don't think Apple has yet absorbed just how big it is: the iPod explosion didn't affect the dev side of the company, which subconsciously still has Mac assumptions in place. This isn't "102: Moving from CodeWar

Unicode is incomplete, and this is the fault of people who it doesn't serve? Developers don't have the right to dictate how people write their names just because they have created a poor implementation. The best solution is suggested in t

There's a scene in the 'Flaming Homer' episode of the Simpsons where Homer fights his way into Moe's packed-out bar to tell Moe he'll never drink there again, but Moe can't hear him over the noise of the cash register. Moe doesn't even noti

Almost the opposite: my position is that there is a distinction but it's purely lexical, and the two terms are effectively synonymous. That's why it's not quite right to say that people "confuse" them all the time (as my grandparent did); i

"I care about the dots/pixel" Yes, but those are two different dots you're talking about. What you actually care about is how many printer dots you get for each image pixel. There is a distinction, and I'm all for precision in language, but

You've got a false distinction there. It's the number of constituents that can be packed in per inch: whether those constituents are print dots, physical pixels, or utterly notional (as in displayed images).

No, DPI and PPI are literally the same thing. (Photoshop used to call what is now PPI "DPI"). "PPI" comes from people wanting a way to talk about the dpi of a digital image without including all the baggage and confusion of dpi, which too f

It's not quite as clear as that. People aren't confusing DPI and PPI -- they're the same thing. Pages like the linked that suggest otherwise are muddying the problem, because they're misunderstanding how printing works by ignoring line scre

You found the OS X UI "bland and ugly" but caring similarly about the aesthetics of hardware is so inconceivable that it "puzzles the hell" out of you? I think you're getting your party lines crossed.

The Mac still attracts a premium, because that's its market now, for better or worse. When it was conceived, the target price was $999, which it didn't actually hit until the underpowered Mac Classic arrived. The other products -- iPod, i
