That fifth trick is superb. Apps that don't reopen their closed main window when cmd-tabbed to drive me nuts (Mail especially, as there's no shortcut to open the message viewer).

Even simpler: 1. Open dropbox app 2. Upload picture from camera roll. 3. There's no step 3.

That affects every page on my Firefox (just installed, latest Stylish). Even the Location Bar goes giant Georgia.

Surprise, the international pricing's a total rip-off. Illustrator, month-to-month: $45. UK: $65 pre-tax, $77 after tax.

It is true for OS X, in the latest dev builds, at least. (I first got bugged by it clicking on the Pow video link at http://pow.cx/ -- when a Mac browser won't play a straight .mov file for political reasons it could be time to change.)

(Bit of context: the Quicktime plugin now has to be enabled on every site you want to use it with; there's no global way around it. Comes in wake of Google's dumping of h.264, which Quicktime handles natively).

Yes, I agree with you, things can get out of control. That's because the other thing the sites with great conversations have in common is an element of moderation and "etiquette". You can't take a random selection of people and expect their

The original post is about forums, not comments, it's in the title. They're the sites where the conversation is the focus. (And most of them have very little truck with "niceties", don't make the nerd mistake of assuming a degree of chatter

The best conversations online are those in spaces that model well to how we converse as people: flat and linear in format. From the Well to Metafilter, the best conversation happens on flat sites. Nesting and threading and sorting all solve

The hardest part about making a complicated schedule is making sure all the posts are covered. Do I have six editors, four designers, two rewrite, one reader and three runners in on Sunday? And if not, who is available -- they haven't worke

This is a fairly classic problem of forum scale. If people don't have an investment in their profile and what it stands for, they won't care about that persona, and you quickly fall victim to the Law of Anonymity. Number of suggestions to s

Am pretty excited about this -- I have an iOS app that would work great as effectively a desktop accessory on the Mac. Unfortunately the UIKit implementation isn't there yet -- there's no NIB loading, table views aren't editable, etc -- tho

Amazon's always played hardball with their API (see also Delicious Library mobile). They're like the Oracle of the generally-cuddly API world, but at least they've always been clear and upfront about it. Don't help them to sell things? Bam.

As the very overweight will attest, "hungry" and "full" are very subjective terms. Eating when they are hungry is what got them into their present state. Laughing won't do much about it, nor will acquiring a drinking problem. Stopping worry

Yes, but all those carriers have had the prices jacked up to the roof. The US gets a $49 3GS, UK prices range from £59 ($95) to £189 (some offer it free on a very expensive monthly contract over two years). For an out-of-date handset. Compa

If I steal your car and then destroy it, it's not right to say it was "just destroyed". In both cases the original possessor is deprived of something.

UN Declaration of Human Rights (ratification varies by country; your mileage may vary) enshrines a right to control of the exploitation of your works, yes.

You're conflating the right of control of exploitation with copyright, which is a legal creation to protect that right. The two are close, but not synonymous. Take photographs: the exclusive first-use of a photograph is a big thing. If you

Depends on the type and scale of infringement and gets slightly pedantic: if I can no longer workably exercise my right -- if the infringement is too widespread, say -- do I still have it?

Sorry, haven't been clear. "Ideas" was supposed to be slightly tongue-in-cheek -- compare "you can steal hearts as well as pens". The thing that is being stolen is the right of exploitation. That is what copyright protects.

The thing that is being stolen is the right of exploitation of your creative work (it's one of the UN Human Rights, that). When I make something, I have the right to control how it is exploited commercially -- even if I simply don't want it
