The Guardian can still publish, is why. The government telling people in its employ that they can't read the publication is a different matter from the government telling people they're not allowed to publish.

It's not really funny — because when you actually do care about the underlying feed parsing, you end up searching in vain for a replacement among readers that are, as you say, lazy prettification on top of bad fetch/parse engines.

You're putting way too much baggage on to "how hard". It doesn't necessarily carry any implications of "yesterday and with no budget"; it's a scoping question. "How much will it take and how much will

Nobody has a singular device. Nobody. Even if they only own one piece of hardware right now, they are surrounded by other hardware they have access to. Why should their stuff be locked to one physical object when it's digital? This isn't

Thinking that sync is optional is a really weird thing that seems to linger in the Apple world. You know the old William Gibson line that cyberspace is the place where telephone conversations happen? Not in the hardware at either end, but i

I think we agree. My complaint is that they're replacing an instant messaging service (which most people treat as synchronous) with an asynchronous service and pretending there's not a fundamental difference here. Sure, some people treat it

That's what away statuses are for! "I'm signed in, but I'm not willing to be interrupted". Hangouts takes away the very thing you say you need. The SMS model is much less useful to IM users. If I was willing to wait for a reply at the other

I think when this hits GMail in earnest there's going to be another huge outcry. Judging by my contact list and the lists of others I see, statuses and presence are a really big deal: people use red-dot to mean "I'm here but interrupt me on

Online isn't the same as "available". A green dot in GChat means actively saying "you can interrupt me". A red dot means "this better be important". Currently about 2/3 of my GChat list is "away". There's a whole world of etiquette here tha

IOS gives you a friendly and official-looking "accept this certificate?" dialog when you connect to a router that offers one. Non-technical users will accept and proceed without blinking.

It's also a pretty trivial task if you control the user's routers and can give them installation disks to make "the internet work". As corporate and university wifi shows, people will willingly accept new certificates required to join hotsp

Or have it added to their chain beforehand. An ISP could trivially include this as part of their "welcome pack" installer CD or the like. Would that silently affect people like us? No. Could they do it to all their non-technical customers?

HTTPS will not prevent this: the ISP can issue their own CA to their users and then decrypt/encrypt https as it passes through them. (Many corporations already do this). What will prevent this is legislation and/or competition. It amazes me

Sexist defence of the patriarchy is far more embarrassing, and I don't want to witness that, either. Virtually all the replies here are moronic. As the piece is not talking about literal grandfathers, there are plenty of non-gendered terms

Yes, because the contexts are wildly different, and so are the genders of the jokers. In terms of power relations, this is exactly the same as how people of colour can use the N-word and white people can't.

So what you're basically attempting is the Discourse equivalent of a StackOverflow "This question is offtopic" thread-close. Good job. What you're attempting is amateur anger management. It doesn't work like that. Your approach is almost cl
