Sadly, that man is dead. The accountant they have running things now is very good at making money, but not very good at creating new products. They are already selling $999 phones, it's hard to see how he can squeeze any more money out

Wasn't this settled by djb? The US government can't punish you for publishing encryption software because it is protected by the first amendment.

They meant that the MBP in general is favoured by software developers (especially until 2016), and the post-2016 MBP is the successor to that but doesn't live up to the reputation.

My parents must not have been sane! London doesn't have the best bicycle infrastructure (it certainly didn't when I was a kid) but you still see parents riding with their kids. Although nowadays you tend to see parents on kick sco

Go is a tool, it's not a religion. People are allowed to criticise it, and they don't have to temper their criticism just because the Go team or Go users have a different opinion. Go is made by Google it's not like it's

I don't have any problems, just use require() for libraries that don't have TypeScript definitions. I wouldn't bother writing .d.ts files for the libraries you use, just be more careful using them.

I'm not sure I agree with this, you can always achieve parallelism with multiple processes and IPC, and can do so fairly efficiently if communication is light. Rails' biggest problem is that it isn't JavaScript, and thus code

Jevons paradox only applies when the cost of energy is the dominating factor. If I replace my fridge with a newer more efficient fridge, I'm not going to buy more fridges: I don't have the space!

It would also be a lot cheaper to dispense with courts and replace them with private arbitrators with the power to send people to prison. A system where the decision on whether you go to jail or not is made by bail bondsmen is not just. If

One benefit of HTTPS is that ISPs can't insert their ads onto your website. Believe me, there are ISPs that do that. > If your ISP is MITMing you, I think you have bigger problems then whether they change the content of my static si

npm works because you can have lodash v3 and lodash v4 existing at the same time, at runtime. Node sees two pieces of code at different locations on disk, and loads them twice, considering them to have no relationship. This means that a lib

> 2/3 of the glass collected is turned into new bottles. It's a seriously dumb process. Take a bottle, crush it, melt it down, and make new bottles. What was wrong with the old bottles?

It's worth noting that programming requires a kind of extreme reading comprehension so the premise of this article probably doesn't apply to programmers (or scientists, writers, lawyers, etc).

Homelessness can't be fixed "at source". People become homeless simply by losing their job and defaulting on their mortgage. Walking around San Francisco you would get the impression that most homeless people are mentally ill

What a lesson in unintended consequences. The license is vague enough that Amazon & co can just lawyer up and ignore it. What are they going to do, sue Amazon? Good luck. On the other hand, it will definitely scare away users of their s

The problem with this is epidemiological. As people move from traditional high-carb (=low cost) diets to fat and protein rich western-style diets, obesity and diabetes tend to increase.
