I really hope Valve succeeds in migrating the PC gaming community off of Windows and onto Linux (maybe Blizzard will help?). It will not be easy.

What makes you think it was string literals? Probably a lot of classes was prefixed with "Alex" or something similar. Folks at Apple, being perfectionists, of course could not live with the code name all over the source :-)

How about a black listing solution? commit block on anything containing the full word "Statement" (or equivalent in in your language of choice). Also code review, of which there will be need for plenty, when bare minimum developers is invol

Yes it is impossible. For example the following query "SELECT person_name FROM persons WHERE person_id = ?" Will be parsed and put in the query cache. Then when it is run (multiple times) it will bind the value in the correct place, and if

User selected columns is easy, just select all required columns each time and display as needed, the performance impact of this is minimal. The fact that the query need not be reparsed is probably a bigger benefit performance wise. Paging i

SP:s was never mentioned in the post you are replying to, but ofcourse if you use dynamic SQL in them (execute immediate in Oracle) it is just as bad as doing string concatenation in other languages. Just dont do that.

Interesting that these Sony TVs run Linux. The Panasonic Viera line runs a version of FreeBSD. I wonder if its possible to run programs such as XBMC on these embedded systems and make it output the picture to the TV screen. I mean its one t

Im using ItelliJ on linux now, IntelliJ is just a .zip. You are right thats the way it works on OS X and that is excellent.

Yes, but still parts of the JVM would be duplicated between apps and updated on app developer X's own schedule.

Yes, that is a bit better than Windows, were this functionality would have mattered the most to have from the beginning. Still, its not 100% the way OS X users expect apps to work.

I use IntelliJ daily, and the install experience is "devloper friendly", not exactly end user friendly. Dont get me started on Eclipse install process. JWS is awful. It is totally not the way users expect to install applications.

The Java way has always been: To run this, click on the .bat file or type java -jar myapp.jar. And some people wonder why Java has been such a failure on the desktop. This should have been in Java from the beginning, instead of outsourcing

I agree. Especially if you are trying to have a 1:1 mapping between tables and classes. The convenience you gain in the short term will be paid by complexity, performance, and code base lock in 100 times in the middle and far term. The rela

Windows has little in common with WP7 aside from the name. There are very few synergies that matter in the real world for a Windows user, selecting WP7 over an Android phone. For example existing Windows skills do not transfer in any way. W

First off I find the NoSQL term in itself very strange. How can you say anything intelligent about "everything that is not using SQL as a query language"? Its like talking about NoJava, instead of talking about Ruby. Props for a well writte

What about when you want to find all notes that was made a specific day last month (say for a report)? Traverse all notebook documents and look at each notes date? Good luck with that.

I guess Mozilla could implement this and still allow the user to save the .mp4 in Firefox. For DRM to be "effective" you have to control the client and not allow arbitrary implementations. Or what am I missing here?
